"These and other weighty matters are obsessively debated on the numerous unofficial Lemony Snicket Web sites and blogs that have sprung up since the series's inception, most notably 667 Dark Avenue (at asoue.proboards11.com), named for the sinister high-rent apartment building in the sixth book, "The Ersatz Elevator."

 EXCLUSIVE Horseradish / Cornucopian Cavalcade news
« Thread Started on Feb 10, 2007, 9:33am »

As I’m sure you’re all aware, Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid and the paperback reprints of TBB and TRR known as Orphans! and Murder! are now but two or three months away, and not much is known about their contents. Fortunately, I have new details of the contents of the books which are exclusive to 667 Dark Avenue.

Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid

As indicated by the advertising for the book, this is a book of witty and wise Snicket quotes, most of which are drawn from aSoUE, although others are new and original to Horseradish – an example of the former is “It is always cruel to laugh at people, although sometimes if they are wearing an ugly hat it is hard to control yourself.” I have been informed that Horseradish contains nearly a hundred such quotes.

Orphans! and Murder!

As we are already aware, these are paperback reprints of the first two books in the series, adorned with new illustrated covers and special subtitles. I have also been informed that they include new illustrations inside as well, although I cannot speculate on what these will be of. However, the main attraction of the reprints is The Cornucopian Cavalcade.

The Cornucopian Cavalcade

The Cornucopian Cavalcade – which you may recall mentioned on the first-released cover of Orphans! – is a free HarperCollins supplement featured in each of the new reprints. The material within, from what I have seen, is designed to complement the penny-dreadful-style of the series. The Cornucopian Cavalcade features:

  • “What Shall I Do, Lemony Snicket?” – an advice column written by Lemony Snicket (the source of the “advice” mentioned on the first-released cover of Murder!);
  • A serialised story by dead author Stephen Leacock (take note – Daniel Handler apparently wrote an introduction for one edition of Leacock’s Nonsense Novels);
  • The Spoily Brats, a comic serial by Michael Kupperman concerning the adventures of intelligent and well-behaved children Richard and Isabella S’Poily;
  • Other ephemera, such as advertisements for strange new inventions.

Wow! Exclusive! How did you score this information, Dante?

It makes me want to go check the Countdown to see exactly how much longer we need to wait.

New illustrations, by Helquist?

HarperCollins and their gimmicks. I refuse to purchase these paperbacks in spite of my desire to read Snicket's advice column.

Thanks for the information, Dante.

Excellent. A 667 exclusive. That's what I like to see. Dante wins.

...Advice column? Serials? Ephemera?

*talks sternly to self*

Phoebe. You cannot afford to buy the entire series again in paperback. No. Really. You can't.

...advice column?

I plan to buy them. I've had several of my books signed, so now I want to preserve them and not read them. If I had these paperbacks I can use them to look things up, re-read them, etc.

They sound interesting. But they also sound like a profiteering gimick so there's no way I'm buying them. The same book with like 2/3 new things I'll zip through in about ten minutes?

Oh, Dante! That makes me vaguely tingly. You and your scary connections. This info could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Silly HarperCollins and their gimmicks--I refuse to buy the new editions, and the Horseradish book, but I'll look at them in the bookstore.
