I think it takes place in France. Handler's from San Fransisco... Duh!!! That's why those things are there!!! Besides, I don't think there's going to be a very big chance of a person named Esmé and a person named Jacques somewhere else... I mean, it just makes sense to me...

I have a feeling that the series isn't meant to take place in a particular time or place.

If it takes place anywhere real it's got to be in Europe because it's the only continent that grants titles like count and duchess.

That's true. He probably just took stuff from a bunch of different countries to make it harder to find out where it takes place. I doubt if he wants us to know. I like to think of it as taking place in Britian or something.

I think that it MAY be in France, but it's probably not. I said that it might be in France.... It's probably where J said it was.

I doubt it takes place in France. I think there would be SOME French words if it did. Or there would be some mention of places there maybe.

what if it takes place in a country that no one notices like Bosnia and Herzegovina or Moldova or something? DH is the type of author that would do that.

Just for reference: Esme is not necessarily a French name. It's the shortened form of Esmeralda.

the book does have a lot of French names like Jacques. France seems like a probable, yet proably unlikely, place.

Canada, maybe? That would explain the importance of Winnepeg and its duchess. However, Jerome mentioned North America in his list of foreign places, which pretty much leaves only Australia.
You certainly noticed those countries, but I never considered that. Aren't those in the Middle East? The books don't have a Middle-Eastern atmosphere to them; they seem British to me.
