He did say, "some places in North America", mind you, so you can't rule out the other places.

Let me get some things straight here I live in Australia Down here we use Dollars and Cents the Metric system and Celsius There is snow and there is desert and there is sea In the books they use Dollars and Cents( the last picture in TBB shows a lolly for 5 cents in the background) when they use the firepokers in TEE they use Farenheit, and we dont use that in australia I think its America, though it has a british feel to it for some reason. I can't imagine them with american accents. there ye go

i think it just takes place in a place, becasue there are no specific citites, just, "The City." And, Besides, has anyone ever heard of the Mortmain Mountains of Caligari Carnival?

My theory is that if the series takes place in the known world, Lemony is renaming certain locations to fit his general theme of gloominess, and to protect the supposedly innocent. For instance, the Mortmain Mountains could be the Dividing Range, a mountain range in Australia.

good theory. That would explain the names of places that dont exist.

hmm....I think I agree with the people it takes place in an imaginary place, and no specific time. i donno...But also, dont the Baudelaires take a trolley to the beach in TBB? (Not sure, dont have my copy!) Well, San Francisco is well known for trolleys...but lots of places have them too! then there's the issue of time: they have "advanced" computers, GIGANTIC skyscrapers, electricity, cars.....basically between not that long ago...

um...Everyone keeps mentioning Mr. Poe saying something about foreign places and stuff...But in ANOTHER forum they said Jerome! Is it Mr. Poe, or jerome? Does anyone know the exact quote?

well i don't see any kangroos and i think violet would not be skipping rocks but playing with a bomerang so it probaly atlantis ;D Excuse u, but I live in Australia, and no I don't play with the knagaroos, BECAUSE they can box ur head in. And it would make sense that they chose an Ozzie chick to play violet, if it was set in Australia.

I think we r all going to have to grow up a teensy bit, and realise that Snicket proberly makes it up. Is Tamora Peirce books related to acctually places? No. Soo, why would Snicket do it the boring way and not get millions for his books. I mean Harry Potter is a big hit, and it's kinda set in Enland, but where is the Hogwarts castle? Get my point?
