I dont think its anywhere, really. There are lots of San Francisco references because David Handler is from San Fran.
Odd note: Lachrymose means sad/crying.

Dude, Tamora Pierce's books contain magic and creatures and are in the middle ages. I think Lemony's books are slightly more normal world. Anyway, here are the facts as I see them: They use Dollars (as seen in last picture of TBB when there is a lolly for a few cents...) They use Farenheit (in TEE when they heat the fire pokers) (although Lemony says so, not the children, and Lemony might come from some place that uses Farenheit...) They speak english And last, but not least, has anyone noticed, in the Calender it says that their house burned down on the 31 of March. So, according to a few people the series has only lasted about 4 months, and in TSS it is in the middle of winter, as there is false spring..... that means, either roughly 4 months have passed, and the series is in the southern hemisphere, or roughly 10 months have passed, and it is in the Northern Hemisphere.
My conclusion is this: The place has Dollars (So it could be America or Australia what other contries...?) Farenheit is used (America, tho the children don't actually say farenheit, it is Lemony, and he might come from some other place. I believe around four months have passed, making it in the southern hemisphere (Australia) SOOOOO, the only place I know (a little help here) that uses Dollars in the Southern Hemisphere is: Australia YAY!!!!

Strange--that's the exact same line of reasoning that led me to decide that the series took place in Australia. I guess Snicketian minds think alike.

I agree with those who say that it takes place in the world of fiction. Seriously, real names and places referred to are just to add a little versimilitude (a word which means something like "sounding real-ish" or something to that effect - I know how to use it, but I can't define it). He could just as easily have said (and one could even argue) that they live on the continent of Adventasia in the Sea of Wrecks on the world known as Phann-tassy, but he didn't (although in theory, we could, because just about everywhere's been ruled out, but the point I'm making is that it doesn't have a setting).

it's in the western hemisphere because in one of the books klaus talks about the sun setting in the west.that's for the western hemisphere

The sun sets in the west no matter where you are. Try travelling to Japan, watching a sunset, and looking at a compass.

no in japan it sets to the east *hits face* For God's sake, you idiot, why do you think they call Japan the Land of the Rising Sun?! The sun is stationary, the earth rotates around it, itself rotating. There are no Western and Eastern hemispheres because the world doesn't use them - it rotates along the northern and southern poles, so you can tell where they are, but there's no such magical Western Pole or Eastern Pole. I mean for the love of the gods, how stupid must you be not to know this? For the sun to set in the east in one country and the west in a different country would require the sun to travel in two different directions at once! How stupid can you be?!!

I agree with those who say it takes in no location other than the Land of Fiction.
Oh, and unless Handler was too careless to realize that Australia has cyclones (correct me if I'm wrong), then the series can't take place there.

Someone asked about where Harry Potter takes place, some time ago i think. Well, i live in England, and yes, it is set in England because A JK comes from England B Surrey is a county in England ( I know because my nan + grandad live there) C Kings Cross is a Central London train station. D Dudley and Flitwick are towns in England
P.S A county is like a U.S State or a Ozzie or Canadian Territory, but loads smaller, coz England is smaller.
P.P.S Surrey is where Little Whinging is set ( see 1st book)

Sorry, I forgot to add something....... My nan has been 2 the castle where it is set, and that is in another county called Cumbria which is "up north" as us southerners call it.
