Hello all, I have just started reading A Series Of Unfortunate Events and have just found these great forums, please may I say this is a brilliant place and I hope to stay here for as long as possible! Anyways on with my review...
I have just finished reading the first of the series, entitled as you may know as the Bad Beggining. I found it very enjoyable to read with Count Olaf being my favourite character! The beggining of the book with the Baudelaire orphans discovering there parents were dead was rather sad and the entrance of Count Olaf was brilliant fun to read. The final part of the book gripped me with suspension and I really could see no way out of the children's situation. I love the book and must go now to read the sequal, thanks!

Thanks for your review, minimachoman. If anyone else would like to give their opinions on the Bad Beginning, I invite them to do so in this thread.
Also, as a note, the Burdensome Books section is filled with spoilers for the later books, so be careful what you read.
I personally thought that TBB was a very sinister book. It was very dark and depressing, and there was a real sense of hopelessness. Count Olaf's threats, and drunken violence, are an excellent portrayal of Handler's original ideas for the character.

I agree with the sense it was very sinister and dark, it was the first type of this style I had ever read in a book and I thought it was wonderful. Thank you for the tip as well Dante.

TBB actually wasn't the first book I read, but it's my favorite of the pre-VFD books. There's a sense of true menace, and some parts are fairly dark, darker than later books. Olaf and his allies are introduced quite well.

TBB is my favourite of the pre-VFDs aswelll. There is a feeling of menace and evil which I was upset to see was lost in the translation from book to movie. In conclusion, this is a very good book to start the series with.

Yes, the darkness something that's missing from the later books. The first few are much darker and more sinister; the later books are less dark, and more humorous and intriguing, what with the VFD mystery and everything. There's a distinct difference between the earlier books and the later books. I love them all, though...

Yes. The aspect of darkness was wonderful; I really felt an overall sense of doom and dread. Perfect! That was the first time I'd ever read a book of that type; it's just wonderfully designed and written! Loved it. I might start a "Where were you when you started this series and why" thread.

The Bad Beginning is my favorite book in the entire series, for the simple reason that it is so dark. Ever since the eighth or ninth book, we've missed that, especially the genius and scariness of Olaf. Read my post in The S..... Series (whatever the board name is) about the books getting worse for more info, albeit there are spoilers.

Do you mean The Sardonic Series board?
I miss the old Olaf. He scared the pants off of me.

I feel bad to be the first one to say this, but I didn't like TBB very much. It's my least favorite of the series (but still very good).
I'm not really sure why I don't like it as much...it was just sort of served as an introduction to the series, but not much else. I tend not to like the first book of a series for that reason. I did love Olaf in this book, I'll admit. Trying to marry Violet? Slapping Klaus? Dangling Sunny in a birdcage 30 feet above ground? Good stuff.

Do you mean The Sardonic Series board? Yes, thank you, that was it. I couldn't remember the "s" adjective - sinister? sarcastic (which means the same as sardonic)?
