Im sure this is old news but it just proves even more that Daniel Handler is a Genius!
"Something false or empty that is purported to be genuine; a spurious imitation. The quality of deceitfulness; empty pretense. One who assumes a false character; an impostor: “He a man! Hell! He was a hollow sham!” (Joseph Conrad). A decorative cover made to simulate an article of household linen and used over or in place of it: a pillow sham." -Dictionary.com

No, I believe there is a misunderstanding. I know what the word 'sham' means. I don't know who doesn't know what the word 'sham' means.

Why would Olaf make his name Sham if he didnt want ne1 to know he's actually a horrible criminal? I mean, think about it, you all know that the word 'Imposter' means, (HOPEFULLY!!!) well, that's pretty much saying that if you are a greedy fugitive that doesn't want to be caught, and you disguise yourself as a sailor and name yourself 'Captain Imposter' I mean, I know Count Olaf is a dim-witted person, but come on!!!! *Izzie*

Let me go one better.
If Captain Julio Sham exists, Handler used it because it's ironic...
