Lemony was supposedly typing part of THH in the "Cathedral of the Alleged Virgin" while a friend of his was playing the organ. Noting that there's no such cathedral, and that "alleged" implies doubt or lack of belief, I say Daniel Handler was showing his anti-Christianity (albeit very subtly) using that paragraph. Of course, Handler is Jewish, so it's quite understandable.

Handler is Jewish? Sweet!...sorry...Anyway, I agree with the fact that anything religious in the books like "Pray this works" is simply a figure of speech. I say things like that all the time and I'm a formerly Jewish atheist, soon-to-be Buddhist.
But when Mr. Poe and Widdershins babble random gods and people ("Blessed Allah! Zeus and Hera! Nathaniel Hawthorne!") I think that Handler may even be making fun of how people curse by saying "Oh my God" or he may be acknowledging that other faiths exist besides Christianity. I don't know.

I've recently re-read The Wide Window and I particularly remember that tidbit where they're speaking about Ike and his love for sunshine, here is the excerpt:
...and I like to imagine that wherever he is now, it's as sunny as can be. Of course, nobody knows what happens to you after you die, but it's nice to think of my husband someplace very, very hot, don't you think?"
Surely this is a reference to Hell... Now, perhaps it's not as religious as other things mentioned within this thread, but it is as least loosely related...

But of course it's irony, though yes, it is quite funny...
Bold words are in memory of Ms. Josephine Anwhistle... lol.

Being a Christian, I sure hope Handler does not write anything [glow=green,2,300]BLASPHEMOUS[/glow] in the series. That's a nasty thing to do!

In an interview with Foreward Newspaper Online in February 2005, Daniel Handler said that the Baudelaires are Jewish (Handler is also).
I think it fits pretty well. All three children have a love of learning and a strong concern for doing the right thing, even while they are being persecuted and kicked from place to place.

Jewish? I eliminated that idea due to the fact that no festivals - hannukah, bar/bat mitzvah, etc. are mentioned. But if Handler says they are then, ok.

How old is one, normally, when one celebrates a bar/bat mitzvah? I think it's twelve or thirteen, in which case Violet may have already had hers before the fire.
If Klaus was going to have a bar mitzvah, that makes the fact that he spent his birthday in jail even more tragic.

Oh, that's right! Poor Klaus.
The Ike thing is funny. I never realized that before, though!

Too me they where simply christians or atheists who didn't go to church or pray a lot.

I assumed that the Baudelaires were raised with no particular religion, as I was. It seems that I tend to impress characteristics of my own life on unknown information about fictional characters, filling in their missing backstory with my own.

Yes, me too, especially if no information about their particular aspects (such as religion) is given. Gramatically, that sentence above (^) looks really weird. Yes, I personally find character descriptions pretty much a waste of time. I can imagine what I need to, all they need to give me are particular, obvious aspects, like scars. Anyone know what I am talking about? All I need to know is what their gender is, and a few important details, and I can already imagine the character. Sadly, drawings, photos and movies usually violently destroy my images of characters. DAMN YOU HARRY POTTER! (the movie)

I wrote loads and loads on this topic for my editorial on the quiet world, I'm not sure of the link though because it says error 403-FORBIDDEN when I try to go on it.
