well maybe they could have comitted suicide by sending there kids to the beach they probly didn't want there kids to be killed with them BUT what type of parent would want to put there kids in so much missery but why would they want to kill them selves if they had a perfect house and perfect lives
don't think olafe is dumd enough to burn down a house and not know someone was in there be sides if he could find violet kluse and sunny so fast i think he would know if they fled from the house

perhaps they thought the organization was more important than their welfare . . . perhaps the mother escaped out the window . . . perhaps the mother is Beatrice . . .

it would be dumb for the baudelaire parents to kill themselves. wouldn't they worry that their kids would *and did* get sent to a mean/evil gaurdian?

The Baudelaire parents did NOT commit suicide. Olaf was at their house the day they died, why invent crazy theories when the answer is pretty obvious?

I agree. From what the books say, the Baudelaire parents were devoted to their children- and their organization- so they probably didn't die on purpose. Besides, if they were to commit suicide, they wouldn't use fire.

I've always thought that the parents were alive, because how could the Baudelaire parents save them from Olaf if the kids were sent to live with him??

Olaf burned their house down. That's all there is to it. Bleh...

Speaking of the beginning picture, why does one of the firefigter's hats have a question mark on them?

Personally, I think that "question mark" is just a sketchy depiction of the badge seen on firefighters' hats, and therefore not significant.

Many could now interpret as the fire department being some secret organization significant to the series (either VFD or OFD) but I think that the lack of insignia shown by the '?' was just to avoid putting the Baudelaires' story in any specific location. I mean, FDNY would put a place to the series, slightly ruining the mystique, don't you think?

Maybe the Bauderlaire parents were having a V.F.D. meeting in their house? Perhaps Olaf, or one of his henchmen snuck in through the passageway connecting the mansion to the Squaler's and burnt the place down? But I guess if that were true then there would have been more bodies found at the scene of the fire. Is it ever mentioned anywhere that the Bauderlaire parent's bodies were found or is that just assumed?
