I think we can respect him. Yes, he said he didn't like kids books that are all happy, but I think he was just trying to say he liked to read books that aren't happy, and authors should like what they write. My point: he may be a very depressed man, because of his childhood, but you can still respect him.

do we need to respect him to like his books tho? respecting him and liking his books(kids or adults) can be connected but don't have to be...
i wouldn't say i respect chopper reid(notorious australian criminal/murderer/whatever) but i like his books...from his memoirs on how he killed people/how his criminal life was etc...and also his kids book..."hooky the cripple"...which is very entertaining...
i don't know how this effects the rest of this topic but i just thought i'd say it...
i miss my ferret

I respect him greatly. Even though he used a pen name for ASOU wich I think was necessary concerning plot and his history of books. I wish I could have won the visit from him. I'd invite u all over! hehe

Okay, this topic is extremely old.. but I actually read the whole thing and wanted to voice something in spite of not reading Daniel Handler's other books (though I mean to in the near future). I think you can respect Handler.. I think it is neat that he wanted to do a spin on the happily ever after stuff, and introduce reality. I think in all respects his books are as groundbreaking and comparable to Lewis Carroll's Alice books. He may say he wanted to write a book that didn't end happily but look at what he is REALLY writing.. he is showing children the world is a scary place full of bossy adults who aren't always going to look out for your best interest, or believe you even if you are telling the truth. Then he has the children save themselves.. by using not superpowers, not their charming good looks.. but their intelligence. How can you not respect that? I think that's really cool, and a positive message.. plus you get a lot laughs by reading the book. In respect to the other books Handler has written.. one their adult books so I didn't expect them to be about pretty things (though I was shocked about the incest stuff, I will admit my eyes bugged a bit and I thought do I really want to read about that?) But I think I need to read the books before I can judge him, and his intentions on writing the book.... and if it is about incest, and not so pretty things, I think that's okay because they are adult books plus.. there are some scary aspects of life that need to be dealt with, and hopefully he gave some kind-of solution in his books. But I guess I shall see when I read them.. Yes I agree 100%! and Doorman that was verry thoughtful of you to think of inviting us all over!

I respect Daniel Handler. He's a cool guy, have you ever heard that NPR interview? He's not like a mean guy or anything, he's just...cool. Even though his other books are kinda weird.
