THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD…
A/N…don’t worry if your character turns out evil…that’s just the way soaps work…for instance, Kate isn’t really a magikarp
Kate peered down into her wine. She was just having a quick drink in her lunch break in the village pub-The Carpenter. She was sitting alone, as she always did, since her friend’s lunch break was half an hour after hers ended. Stupid idea…and it was a stupid job with a stupid boss-working in an underwear factory. Well-not quite that-she was the PA of the boss, so she had different things and times for everything then the other working people.
Finishing the glass off, Kate stood up and put on her long draping coat, then headed off towards the pub door. She arrived outside, where the wind was blowing mildly; scattering leaves from the trees in the nearby park across the streets. Kate lived alone at Number 6 667 Street, with Jessica and Bsam-a happy couple, living next door, and Clemintine, who lived with her mother Alison living the other side next door always acting happy and family like. Kate crossed the road, and turned around to where the factory-named Undieneath It All- stood. Kate arrived at the door, and shoved it open, stepping inside, and stopping the wind-which was getting harder-from shunting against her back as she shut the door behind her. Sitting at the complicated looking sowing machines were a group of people staring at her as Kate entered the room-there was Lauren, Ann and Aimee who were just a few. They were very nice people though-just not to her. At the back, Kimia sat in concentration, but looked up and gave Kate a small smile. She was the nice one-the one who didn’t get jealous when Kate got promoted by Zach-in fact, Kate wasn’t sure she was even living in the village when that happened-Kimia never really spoke about her past-Kate found it quite strange.
“Ah…good to see you Kate,” Zach’s voice said, and Kate turned to see him at the office door, leaning against the side of it, wearing his pinstripe suit as usual, and shoving his hands down in his pocket. “You’re early from your lunch break.” Kate gave a shrug, as she took off her coat, and hung it up on a peg on the wall.
“I just couldn’t wait to get back,” Kate joked, rolling her eyes.
Over at The Carpenters, Jessica pulled herself through the door, and walked up to the bar, where Trish was leaning against the side of it, as she always did in her working ours of being a bartender.
“Hey Trish,” Jess said, pulling over a bar stool from beside her, and dumping herself on it.
“Hi,” Trish replied,” Want a drink?”
“Yeah please…just a dry white wine,” Jess replied.
“Coming right up,” Trish said, standing up right to get the drink ready.
Kate sat down in the office, and checked the desk for any work post of forms for her. There weren’t any, and Kate turned around and gave a sigh.
“Sir!” she called. Zach entered the doorway after a couple of seconds.
“Call me Zach,” he laughed,” How many times do I have to tell you?” Kate shrugged.
“Anyway…what is it?” Zach asked.
“I haven’t got any work on my desk,” she said,” Do you need me to ‘assist; anything?”
“Nothing at the moment,” her boss replied,” I have an order for a load of materials coming in a few days, but that doesn’t include you doing any work at the moment.”
“Okay then,” Kate said, standing up,” So…should I go?” She turned around, but not too see Zach staring at her with his big boss smile and his jacket tightly done up. She saw him undo the buttons loosely, with a strange look in his eyes, and a smile that meant something different then what he would do to his PA.
“Uh…you all right?” Kate asked. Zach stepped forward.
“Yeah…fine,” Zach said, and sat on the front of the desk. Kate gave a quiet squeal.
“You live alone, right?” he asked. She blushed.
“Yeah.”
“So no boyfriend or anything?”
“No-Zach, what are you saying?” But the answer was a sweet kiss on the lips, pulling her forward into his grasp. It only took her a second to pull her arms away, and stumble right down onto the hard floor, leaving Zach sitting on the desk, with a surprise look on his face. Kate stood up, and stared right at her.
“What the hell?” she asked,” What are you trying to do?”
“Kiss you,” Zach replied simply.
“Well I got that!” Kate cried,” But why…I’m your PA...you’re my boss…we don’t love each other!”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Kate,” Zach said, standing up,” Because I love you.”
“You look upset,” Trish mused to Jess,” What’s up…this happy married life not how it seems.”
“It’s fine…I’m fine. Really Trish,” Jess replied, and then took a sip of wine.
“No-there’s something wrong. I can tell,” Trish insisted, raising an eyebrow. Jess sighed.
“Well…I took a test earlier,” she said.
“Test? I thought you were out of school.” Trish laughed.
“A…you know,” Jess said,” Pregnancy test.” Trish’s eyes widened.
“Oh…oh dear,” she said,” I think I can guess the results.”
“Negative,” Jess cried, to Trish’s surprise.
“So…that means you want a baby?” she asked. Jess sighed once more.
“Kind of,” she replied,” I don’t think Sam does though…but then again, if I get pregnant he can’t stop it really can he.”
“Unless he gags you and makes you abort it,” Trish laughed. Jess gave a small chuckle.
“But anyway…Jessica, I though you hated children,” Trish then added. Jess now shrugged.
“I don’t know…things change.”
“So…you’re going to try again then?” Trish asked.
“Yeah…tonight.”
“Ah…can someone take over?” Lauren asked,” I got the machine running really well for once, and I really need a piss.”
Ann laughed.
“Well tough…I’ve just got my crappy piece of metal working,” she snorted.
“Well…I can’t hold it in any longer,” Lauren said, then flicked the switch, and pulled herself up from her chair, and headed for the loo.
“You…you what?” Kate asked, stepping back.
“I love you,” Zach said,” And you’re single-I’m single…it just works.”
“But we both need to love each other,” Kate snorted,” And I don’t love you.” She turned around towards the door, but Zach stepped forward, and grabbed her, turning her around and snogging her on the lips. Kate tried to break free, but then she gave up after a second, and realized that it wasn’t bad. She was enjoying it. But what did that mean? She loved Zach…she loved her boss. She led him tight around his waist, and they pushed their lips together more.
Lauren flushed the toilet, and then headed out. She saw the office in the distance…the door open. She could hear a faint strange noise, and crept along the hall to see what was happening. She peered from the side to the door, and then gasped, almost falling back. Kate was kissing Zach. At first, she felt like confronting them-but then she thought she could tell everyone else, and they could make her life a living hell. But then, as she walked back along the hallway and back into the main room, she realized that best thing was to keep it quiet…and use it later on.
“Did you just hear something?” Kate asked, pulling herself away from Zach…it sounded like someone was walking around the door.
“Nah…probably just one of those lot having a pee,” Zach said, and then grabbed Kate smoothly again. They both fell back onto the desk slowly together , as Lauren sat down again, a smug smile on her face and the information in her head to get Kate out of the business, and let her be promoted instead.
