PrologueFrom the desk of Mr. Sixteen June 7th It has only been a year since I took the position of Chief Crime Correspondent, but already I feel that it’s time to pass the torch. This case has put me through more stress and discomfort than anything else I’ve encountered. I suppose it’s perfectly reasonable when you consider who was involved. My old friends. I hadn’t heard from them in years, but they had kept in contact with each other; to their detriment, as it turned out. I still can’t quite understand how it all fell apart. Maybe I never will. In theory it should have worked perfectly. They should have lived alongside each other like they had always planned. Damn it, they should have lived... Only they know the full story. I came along too late, after it was all over, though that hasn’t stopped me from wondering what would be different if I’d known earlier. Could I have stopped it? Would I have made things worse? It doesn’t matter now. They are not the people I knew long ago. BSam, Emma, Fancy, Libitina, Shelly, Tragedy, Trikip, Willis: these names were once associated with hope and promise. Now they are sullied by betrayal, malice and deceit. I don’t know what lies ahead for me and, despite wanting to leave all of this firmly in the past, it has changed me. Hopefully I can learn valuable lessons from the mistakes of my friends. If only they had learned those lessons for themselves, nobody would have been hurt and nobody would be left with blood on their hands.

Chapter 1: Getting StartedEmma smiled as she stepped out of the car. Looks like I’m the first one here, she thought. She walked up to the open door and stepped inside. The house was huge, its emptiness making it seem even bigger. Then again, it would need to be if they were all to live here together. There were six bedrooms, so it looked like some of them would be sharing. She wandered around some more, checking out the kitchen and the garden. It was perfect. She walked back out to the car and saw the van she had hired pull up behind her. With some help from the driver, she moved her boxes inside. She thanked him and watched him drive away. The van drove down the long driveway and through the tall gates that surrounded the property. Gathering her thoughts, Emma Squalor opened her first box. She took out the first item – a doormat – and placed it at the entrance. She read it and smirked before returning to her belongings. “Welcome Home!” *** There was a clunking noise coming from outside the house. Emma stood up, cradling her cup of coffee. She moved towards the window to see what was happening. A car chugged slowly up the driveway, desperately trying to drag a trailer behind it. Just as it got to the front of the house, it sputtered and died. Emma ran to the front door to welcome her new housemate. She watched him jump out of the car and kick it, swearing. She giggled and ran down the steps. “Can’t even make it five minutes before giving out on me... Knew I should have bought that guarantee when I had the chance. Stupid piece of-“ “Tragedy!” Emma called. He looked up, having forgotten where he was for a minute. “Oh, Emma, hey!” he said. “I didn’t realise you were here already.” “Yeah,” she said, helping him to pop open the back door. “I got here about two hours ago. You’re going to love the place. I’ve already moved most of my stuff in.” Together they emptied the trailer and moved everything inside. Tragedy slammed the door of his car, causing the window to fall out. He groaned and walked up to the house dejectedly. Emma handed him a cup of coffee and they sat down to take a break. “It’s going to be hectic for a couple of days while everyone gets settled,” she said, “but I’m excited. Aren’t you?” He looked at her and thought about it. Despite the fact he had driven across the country in a glorified bucket, he knew what his honest answer was. “You know what? I really am.” *** “What the hell is in this?” Tragedy huffed as he carried a box upstairs. “It’s my Adrien Brody memorabilia collection,” Trikip said dreamily. “Be careful with it.” He had just arrived with his sister, Libitina, who was chatting with Emma downstairs. “I’ve lived with him all my life,” she said, “so it’s no big change. But to be here with the rest of you, it’s something I’ve never experienced. Even at parties, I usually just sit quietly and avoid getting involved. So this is a big step for me.” “We’re glad to have you here,” Emma reassured her, patting her on the shoulder. “You don’t need to be worried about anything.” With that, there was a loud crash above their heads. Trikip screamed. “MY ZOOSPOONS!” “Like I said,” Emma muttered. “Everything will be fine.” They rushed upstairs to comfort the downcast Trikip as he picked up the pieces of his Zoospoon set. Tragedy looked on, not quite understanding what the big deal was. It was just a bunch of spoons. Eventually, Trikip stopped hyperventilating and they were able to get back to business.

That was just fantastic! I loved the part where the window fell out of Tragedy's car and the bit about Trikip's collection of Adrien Brody memorabilia. ;D

Chapter 2: Late ArrivalsAs she sat in the kitchen, watching the sun rise over the backyard, Libitina thought about how she had gotten here. They had all known each other for years, virtually. 667 Dark Avenue had been like an online home. It was a real shame when the site had to be closed down, but there just wasn’t enough to keep it going. After long goodbyes and promises to keep in touch, Emma Squalor made a proposition. They would keep 667 alive by living together. It was a bold idea, and many members brushed it off as frivolous. Others appreciated the sentiment but realised that it would be impractical. Seven members, however, saw the potential in Emma’s plan. They were already friends and many of the group had met in real life. It could actually work. All that remained was to wait for the last ones to arrive. *** BSam saw the house rise up above them as the bus pulled to a stop. He couldn’t believe how big it was. It looked as though it had been pieced together from several different buildings ranging from modern to colonial times. The expanse of grass surrounding it on all sides was surrounded itself by tall railings. It was unbelievable. He smiled and looked down at the head resting on his shoulder. “Wake up, Shelly,” he said, gently shaking her. “We’re here.” *** The Australians had just sat down when the doorbell rang. “That must be our stuff,” Shelly said. “We’re getting it delivered from the airport.” She stood up and made her way to the door. To her surprise, it wasn’t a delivery man. It was a very dishevelled Fancy. “What happened to you?” Shelly asked, taken aback. “I mean, please come in,” she added, as Fancy glared at her. She stepped aside and let her new housemate enter. Fancy, clothes rumpled and feet dragging, walked straight past her and threw herself onto the couch. Tragedy was about to rush over to help, but decided against it. Instead, BSam did the gentlemanly thing and brought her a cup of coffee. “No, no, no, no,” Fancy said, pushing it away. “Not more coffee. I haven’t had a proper night’s sleep in three days. I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, I’m not sure. All I know is that I started in Michigan and yesterday, just when I should have been getting here, I was stopped by border police.” “You were heading into Canada?” “Not that border,” she sighed. Tragedy burst out laughing. “You idiot!” he said, hysterically. “We’re nowhere near Mexico. How can you be so stupid?!” Libitina walked over and slapped him, hard, across the face. “It’s okay, dearie,” she said, covering Fancy in a blanket. “You just rest and we’ll move in your things.” Tragedy rubbed his cheek, where Libitina had struck him and went outside, embarrassed, to carry in some boxes. “Where is he?” Fancy mumbled as her eyelids grew heavier. “He’s getting your belongings,” Trikip said. “Don’t worry.” “Not him...” she yawned. “My BFF...” *** Willis stood just inside the entrance gate, the sun setting behind him. He was about to make his way up to the house when he heard a rustling noise to his right. There was something moving in the bushes. Putting his bag down, he made his way across the lawn. “Hello?” he called. “Is somebody there? It’s me. Willis.” He saw something glint in the dusky light, followed by more frantic rustling. It stopped before he made his way over. Looking into the bush, he saw that the railings had been bent wide enough that someone could slip through. Confused, Willis turned back around and stumbled over something. He looked down and saw what had caught the sunlight. It was a pair of binoculars. Not fully understanding what had just happened, he picked up his bag and walked towards the front door. He glanced back at the bush and worried about what he was going to tell his friends.

Heh-heh - Libby is one tough girl. Also, I wonder who (or what) has bent the bars of the gate? Mysterious!

Doing well, Sixteen. I should really continue Parallel Universe, but I can only think of an ending to the series.
