The above is true. If S. Theadora Markson was into adulthood when Bertrand was 13 or so, She doesn't necessarily have to die within our span of knowledge. There's plenty of time.

In regards to the Sunny theory, I have a few ideas of my own. I think it's necessary to mention that we still don't know what happens in the 10-20 to maybe even 30 years between the end our knowledge from ATWQ and the events of ASOUE. Perhaps Theadora becomes a friend of the Snicket family. Perhaps it is a custom that your chaperone tales precedent as your child's namesake. We are in the dark.

Suggestion: move the above to Ghastly games. A funny board bears the same name as this. Lighten you up.

According to Mr Snicket's Facebook Q and A: Well, we don't in the book - unless, indeed, it stands for 'Solitude'. That isn't a very plausible name in English (though for that matter neither is 'Endeavour'), but I believe 'Soledad' (short for Maria de la Soledad) is a possible name in Spanish. So perhaps it is her name; who knows?

It's likely that Theodora's parents were hipsters, so Solitude is also a possible option. Solitude Theodora Markson sounds like an especially cool name.

And what do hipsters have to do with it?

And what do hipsters have to do with it? They are more likely to give their children names like 'Solitude'. It's just speculation, through.

I hope Handler is telling the truth. It is a mystery I would like solved.

I just had an idea I didn't see anyone mention, that the S. could possibly stand for Shirley and it being the in-universe inspiration for Olaf's disguise in TMM (meaning he knew her from somewhere).
I've also found out about Shirley Ardell Mason, an infamous American psychiatric patient who was reputed to have multiple personality disorder (two of her reportedly 16 personalities were male). A book and following movie adaptations based on her life used the pseudonym Sybil Isabel Dorsett to protect her identity (I've actually stumbled upon her Wiki page looking up people named Sybil, thinking that that might be the S). The multiple personalities thing kind of parallels both Olaf being disguised as Shirley, and S. Theodora Markson disguising herself more than once in ATWQ as well. Furthermore, all these names (Shirley Ardell Mason/Sybill Isabel Dorsett, S. Theodora Markson, Shirley T. Sinoit-Pecer) have prominent middle names. It's probably quite a stretch, but considering how little we have to go on what the S stands for, I thought I'd mention this.
Or maybe Handler just named it after that Law&Order actress idk

Even if it's not true, it's a good theory, convincingly-connected. I could want this to be the reason Shirley is so named, at least.

It does rather bump up against Handler's statement that it's in the text, though (unless this is taken to mean just that the name is somewhere in Snicket's works - but in that case it could still be Sunny).

I did consider his statement when I had the idea and my excuse was also that he meant in his/Lemony Snicket's work in general (re:Shirley T. S.-P., not Ardell Mason, obviously.)
