Chapter One: Spying Violets
Bandit walked out of the room, rubbing his wrists where the handcuffs had been.
“Once again, we apologise profusely,” an agent was saying, his arm around Bandit’s shoulder. “If there’s anything we can do to make up for it...”
“Well now that you mention it,” Bandit ruminated, “I was in a spot of bother when you dragged me away, certain troubles with the law.”
“Say no more,” the agent replied. “We’ll have your record wiped clean.”
Bandit cheerfully strode off with his conscience clear.
Agent L watched him exit the DANTE headquarters through her binoculars. She let out a sigh of relief to see that he was still alive.
“Is that him?” Pandora asked, leaning over her shoulder.
“Get back!” Linda said, shoving her head down. “We can’t let them see us!”
“I’m hungry,” Bee said. “Hey! Is there any food in this limo?” She knocked on the dividing window which rolled slowly down.
“What’s up?” Willis asked.
“Bee was wondering if there was any food in the limo,” Sherry Ann explained. “Meanwhile, Linda was complaining that they might spot us here.”
“That’s right,” Linda said, fuming. “So if you’d all kindly shut up and let me get on with my job it would be much appreciated. And I said to call me Agent L while we’re out on the field.”
“You did invite us along,” Sophie said, crossing her arms.
“I had no choice. After the chaos you caused in Vegas and then the whole confusion at the wedding I needed your help. The good news is that unfortunate little man got out alive. The bad news is that DANTE’s headquarters is more heavily guarded than I expected.”
Bee had stopped listening and was searching through the limo for something to eat. She pressed a button in one of the armrests and the seat beside her shot through the roof. Linda spun around and grabbed her by the arm.
“What are you doing?” she seethed. “You know I’ve had the limo decked out by the crew at HERMES. Stop fiddling around.” She had barely reached the end of her sentence before Pandora had ejected another seat.
“Oops, sorry.”
Linda bit her lip in frustration and wondered if she had made a mistake bringing these people along. They had no formal training, they were likely to blow her cover at any moment, and they were evidently quite hungry.
“Here,” she said, tossing them a vial of liquid. “One drop each and it will feel like you’ve had a full meal.”
One by one, Willis and the bridesmaids took a drop of the liquid.
“Wow! Tomato soup!” Pandora said. “I can taste it running down my throat.”
“Roast beef and a baked potato!” Sherry Ann said, scratching her face tattoo.
“With sour cream!” chimed Bee.
“Blueberry pie and cream!” Sophie said. “It’s the most marvellous blueberry pie and cream I’ve ever tasted.”
“Am I the only one that just tastes water?” Willis asked.
They sat back, satisfied at last. Sophie found it hard to fit into her seat, however. She looked down at her hands and saw that they were slowly turning blue as they swelled up like balloons.
“She’s poisoned us!” Sophie screamed. “That magee poisoned us all!”
“Oh wait,” Linda said, watching Sophie expand. “You got the blueberry one didn’t you? This always happens with the blueberry ones. I guess they’re still working on it back at the lab.” She went back to her binoculars as Sophie popped out of the hole made by the ejector seat and floated down the street.
