Editor’s note – This story is based on the TV show Orphan Black. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. However it is in no way necessary to be familiar with the show to enjoy the story. I will loosely follow the basic plot, and there may be some mild spoilers from the first episode but I will not include any of the major twists of the show because I don’t want to spoil it and I would like to let my own creativity drive the story.
Chapter 1
Piper walked slowly onto the train platform. It had been over a year since she had been in the city, and she was nervous. A petty criminal, she was often on the run from the police for something or other, but it unfortunately also meant that she wasn’t able to see her daughter. For the past year she had been in the care of Piper’s foster father, Hermes. Piper’s early childhood was something of a mystery, but when she was about 5 she was placed in Hermes’ care in the UK along with her foster sister, Bee. The two were still close friends, and Bee was waiting in the city for Piper. Hermes was a loving parent but he frowned upon some of Piper’s illicit behavior, and so he took custody of her daughter. Hermes had moved her from the UK to America. In the interim, Piper had been mostly clear of trouble, and was ready to prove to Hermes that she deserved her daughter back. Failing that, she was ready to kidnap her and run away to start a new life.
When I said Piper had mostly been clear of trouble, I do mean mostly because some recent events had led her to falling into some old habits. Piper had been at the house of a former associate, Tragedy. The two used to be close, but Tragedy had in general treated her poorly and took advantage of their friendship. He would find reasons to get angry and cause arguments because he needed conflict in his life to feel alive. Piper eventually got sick of the abuse and told him they were no longer friends, calling him out on his fakeness. After a vile argument, she stormed off and headed to the city. Tragedy thought she would be back to apologize, so he waited in his chair to gloat. After a day though, he started to worry. He went to his most prized possession to comfort himself on his loss. To his dismay, it was gone, and after blaming the cleaning lady and making numerous other excuses without taking any blame himself, he finally realized that Piper must have stolen it. “Oh Piper, you shouldn't have done that,” he said ominously.
Piper checked her bag to make sure Tragedy’s most prized possession was safe. Looking down the platform, she noticed somebody else was standing there. A young lady about the same height as Piper. She was well dressed with her hair done up and was holding a fancy leather purse. Piper was startled because she hadn't seen her there before, but walked a little closer. As she did, she looked at the stranger and noticed something odd. The person looked identical to her. The two girls exchanged eye contact, and Piper saw sadness in her eyes but no confusion, which was strange because Piper was beyond confused. Who was this woman who looked exactly like her? But she never got a chance to ask, because the next train was approaching. The stranger gave Piper one more look and a regretful nod, put down her bag, then jumped in front of the train. The train stopped and security arrived on the scene, which spooked Piper. Thinking quickly, she grabbed the stranger’s bag and ran away.
