Terry was awoken by the noise coming from the roof above him, moving ever so slightly and letting a thin layer of dust fall over the room he shared with Pen, covering his nose with the cause of his allergies and making him sneeze loudly, then waking the rest of the people who lived in the house, the sound easily passing through the thin walls of 667 Dark Avenue. The door quickly opened revealing an excited Bandit, eyes open wide from all the energy drinks he had been consuming to stay awake the whole night in expectation for the arrival of Santa Claus. "It's him!" he yelled to a confused Pen and an unenthusiastic Terry, who knew that Santa was nothing but a lie parents told their children to make them believe in the magic of Christmas and that the noise he and Bandit had heard was probably just a light earth tremor. However, he didn't want to destroy his friend's joyful illusion, he who happily went from door to door, announcing the long-awaited moment: he would discover who the kind gift-giving man really was. So Terry just laughed at his housemate's naivety, which he did find adorable, but led him to a sudden confirmation of his own intellectual superiority- which he had suspected for a long time.
One by one, the members of that close community stepped out of their rooms: Nicole was especially grumpy for having her slumber interrupted in the middle of the night, even more when she discovered why. Sixteen, who had spent the night playing his uke and singing Christmas songs for his fellow housemates, wasn't that upset about Bandit's shouting, he was filled with Christmas cheer, each carol he sang gaining more meaning for him. Sophie quickly joined Bandit in his excitement. Bee practically crawled out of her bedroom, holding back her homicidal instincts and only taking confort in the fact that her female friends' hair looked every bit as messy as hers. But above all, they were all curious. Some really wanted to discover Santa Claus' identity, some wanted to watch the others' disappointment, but something brought each of them to the hallway, maybe some weird sort of "spirit". The whole group followed Sophie and Bandit to the living room, only to find the presents wrapped under the tree but no sign of the kind man they were looking for.
Bandit ran outside and could see Santa flying away, guided by his trusted reindeer. Hopeless and utterly frustrated, he fell to the snow on the ground, letting out a piercing cry "Noooooooo!" He was incredibly tired because of all the sleepless hours he had just spent, so tired he could not contain his emotion, his tears fell on the snow as he sobbed and wondered if he hadn't warned the others, maybe he would have met his hero. The 667ers came out the front door to watch this heartbreaking scene. Terry, who was hoping for a good laugh, was overwhelmed with sadness and understood his friend's situation, for he had also nearly met one of his idols: Lou Reed, who had recently passed away before the scheduled concert which Terry was going to attend. All of the others could relate to the boy's feelings in some way and were deeply affected by the crying. Sophie was the first to fall by the boy's side and hold him in her arms. She was then followed by all of the other housemates who came together for a warm embrace in the freezing cold.
All but one.
While the friends were rising from the ground and wiping their tears, Charlie pointed out that someone was missing. "Where's Hermes?" he asked, confusing and then scaring everyone. In crushing fear that he might have died on Christmas, the 667ers ran back inside and into Hermes' bedroom. It was empty. A sigh of relief. "Well he's not dead." said Sam, who could always see the bright side of things, even more so when drunk because of all the eggnog he had been drinking. But the mystery remained: where was the much beloved Hermes, who everyone saw nearly as a father figure? They split into groups: Liz, Pen and Bryan searched every bedroom; Terry, Anka and Willis looked through the messy basement; Sophie, Nicole and Bee thoroughly inspected the first floor and the rest of them went out, trying to figure out where Hermes could have gone in such a cold winter night. Hours later, they gathered in the living room, exhausted, saddened and puzzled. They sat down on the large couch and together spent the night, some trying to stay awake waiting for their lost friend, some asleep, going through terrible nightmares.
The following morning, the housemates woke up to the incredible smell of pancakes, eggs and bacon. They went into the dining room only to find the table set with an amazing breakfast waiting for them and something more special: Hermes sat alone at the table with a smile, showing he had cooked them all the delicious meal. The friends celebrated, they were even more confused, but grateful and happy to have their eldest member back. The food was plenty and the conversation flowed swimmingly, but Mister M couldn't help but to ask: "Where were you last night?" The room was silent once more. Hermes was usually a reserved person but they felt they deserved an answer. So in his usual mysterious way, he simply replied: "I had something to deliver." Nothing more was said of his disappearance and the members of that community spent an unforgettable Christmas day, closer than ever before.
