This is my contribution to the festivities of our 13th anniversary. Before you embark on 667: The (or at least a) Playlist, consider the following questions:
1) Would you be interested in a bizarre exploration of 667 past and present? -Yes/No 2) Are you not a grump who hates music? -Yes/No 3) What could possibly go wrong? -Yes/No 4) Hey, that wasn’t a yes or no question, dude. Why’d you answer it like it was? -Yes/No

Welcome to an odd musical journey that is part fic, part history, part tribute to 667/Snicket, and part self-indulgent music collection. Most importantly, it is as over the top as possible. 667: The (or at least a) Playlist comes in at 49:37, though I had been hoping for a neat 45, because some songwriters don’t know when to put a sock in it. BTW, here’s the playlist’s full cover, which I strongly suggest looking at because it’s pretty great if I do say so myself. It was too big to put on the forum. Click on the spoiler thingummy below to begin the experience. TRACK 1 www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpxzFkUAPEDramatic Music: The Creation of 667 In the beginning, there was overall very little. Just a void. Then a cloud of granite (yes, there is granite in this void, shut up), got mixed in with a denser part of void. They drifted together for a long time, fermenting, until some passing heavy falling object smashed through them. (Incidentally, I believe it was around this time that some American guy was starting to write for children for the first time, but whatever.) The void and granite mix shattered into tiny pieces, one of which eventually gave birth to Proboards. The rest of the void tossed up new lifeforms like mad for a while, and Literature, Sass and Pinstripes formed and heaved themselves out onto the void’s shores. After a long period of merging, evolving and sexual experimenting, 667 Dark Avenue was created… TRACK 2 TRACK 3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlQgEs4TKUU667 is, is it not, a source of information. Apart from compendiums on Mr Snicket’s work, you can find fictional descriptions of how prominent 667ers would have died in a hypothetical apocalypse, magazine articles on Kpop, listings of book tour dates, you name it. It’s like, duh, a library. So please welcome to the stage: Mr Handler on vocals and accordion and Ms Kalman on percussion as they perform Handler’s ode to libraries. TRACK 4 www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_SHwJybAWoUm, and then there was this thing called The Golden Age, apparently. I dunno really, but here you go, I guess. Please direct all further enquires to BSam. TRACK 5 www.youtube.com/watch?v=twRIdbAZlw0Time for a little mock-study of 667 society. Told you this mix would be over the top. (Also, thanks to Linda, I learned recently that a number of 667ers don’t like musicals. *evil laugh*) TRACK 6 vimeo.com/92053662So, I guess you could say that 667 has two main factions. Ther’re the Burdensome Books guys and the others, who you could say exist on the fringes of 667’s society, basically have become a society of their own, living outside of the forum’s original purpose, and generally being the exciting ones. This is for the first group: simply BB. And hey, it’s an amusing video, in which Mr Handler sings a rather overzealous endorsement of words over illustrations, live to the Charlotte Zolotow award committee. His own composition, in fact, and of a strikingly similar tune to Without Libraries. The audience is very appreciative, and even try to sing along at one point, embarrassingly. The first faction should appreciate this, given that they have probably said much the same thing to each other, until being told the subject has already been covered. TRACK 7 www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q_hcCQC06wAnd this is to represent the others (fringes of society, living outside of the forum’s purpose, exciting). Yeah, well, what did I tell you about over the top? TRACK 8 www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cu_eexXBbAA little more history. 667 is a proud community, having survived the wilderness years between Snicket series from 2006 to 2012. During this time, I believe, any other online Snicket communities folded, but 667 fought through. Sure, it got quieter, but it didn’t die. It was alive and healthy (?) to see 10 years in 2012, followed by – next up – it’s idol getting his act together and writing a prequel. Note: that little distorted noise around 2:52 was the sound of Bryan dying. Hey, it has to happen. TRACK 9 www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP15t_wnrEwNow, if you’re basically just here for 667 itself and the words “October 23, 2012” mean nothing to you, just shush and enjoy this song anyway (I command you). But, if you have in fact read ATWQ, this track is here in a historical capacity to represent the time when that series started and the fandom wilderness ended and 667 got busier and general good stuff occurred. Why this track? Listen to these bloody lyrics – the imagery is very ATWQ, even if the overall plot isn’t. TRACK 10 www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Rmg1y3bCd8The apocalyptic overtones of this track offset any possible sentimentality that might come from putting something called How Far We’ve Come on an anniversary mix. Besides, if you think about it, the end of an era is coming up, given that ATWQ is drawing to a close and 667 will naturally get quieter. TRACK 11 www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n1AXekCOQ4Alright alright, before you ask, this isn’t related to anything whatsoever. Because I spinelessly felt bound to customs and expectations, this is just the obligatory Stephin Merritt track. I know, I know. Wait, did I actually fool you into thinking there wouldn’t be one? Wow. (At least you get to enjoy a nice music video.) TRACK 12 www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t_EN-HZVLwWhat did I say about self indulgent music collection? It’s called Avenue, it’s pretty, and… er. Well, I guess you could interpret the lyrics as representing the darker, more terrifying parts of 667 society that I didn’t cover earlier. *shrugs* TRACK 13
