It's been known for much of the year that a box set for ATWQ, A Complete Mystery, was coming close on the heels of the final book - specifically, it was set for October 20th, three weeks after the publication of ?4. Yet as the date grew nearer and nearer, it was strange that there was no box art publicised for it. I scoured the Internet day after day for it, and having found nothing even up to a fortnight in advance of publication I was starting to wonder if something had occurred behind the scenes to delay it. As it turns out, however, my fears in that particular direction were ungrounded. Though it's only just over a week until the box set comes out, a preview of its box art has finally appeared online. So, does this (and I quote) "handsome gift box" live up to the lavish illustrative standards of its spiritual predecessor, The Complete Wreck? Well, in a word... no. Look familiar? Perhaps the following image will jog your memory: ...At any rate, since I have no conception of the value of money, I will be purchasing an edition of this box set and will showcase all of its sides in full as soon as it arrives. For now, though, I think we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Oh well. I've never been hugely appreciative of art but even I have been a little unhappy with the way ATWQ has dealt with art. Don't get me wrong, Seth is brilliant and every picture inside the book is wonderful, but the cover art and box art and stuff has not been particularly outstanding. I wouldn't buy A Complete Mystery.

One of the sweepstakes winners got a copy of A Complete Mystery, and I can tell from the spine-side photograph that the ?1 back cover illustration does indeed wrap around to all sides. Can even I justify spending money on this? Honestly, probably not... I have enough copies of the books as it is.

I think Pepper's post eloquently sums up my feelings very well.
Seriously? The side of the box says "by the author of ASoUE"? Good grief, that seems like very unsnickety advertising. Did ATWQ sell that badly?

Seriously? The side of the box says "by the author of ASoUE"? Good grief, that seems like very unsnickety advertising. Did ATWQ sell that badly? Well, I don't think it's irrelevant information, but it was pretty conspicuous that in the early years of ATWQ they did everything they could to distance themselves from ASoUE by never mentioning it and having a completely different cover style... and then about halfway through they changed tack and turned "Before A Series of Unfortunate Events" into a regular tagline and emphasised the relationship more. So in answer to your question... there may have been an element of that. And that may be the reason we got things like a special edition and a box set with zero new art, in contrast to ASoUE, which had multiple editions of TBB with fresh art and at least six box sets with original artwork.

Hmmm. Not what I expected at all, but welp. It could have been way worse.
We have a price already? I'm not a fan of it but I may buy it so I can have the two box sets and can give my old ATWQ books to a friend as a really good gift.
