There is probably already a post about this, but does anybody know the answer to the last chapter (Shouted Word) in FUTSI? I've tried so many times to figure it out, and I think the answer might be "Ellington", though I'm not sure. Anyone know?

I'm not sure there is a single canonically correct answer, or even any substantial hints about it, but 'Ellington' is definitely supposed to come to mind. I seem to remember there being another relevant nine-letter name, but I can't think of any right now, so that's probably just my mind playing tricks on me. Anyway, I thought pretty much the same thing as you.

I agree that we're not supposed to have a concrete answer from the text. But for the sake of throwing more names into the ring, Josephine is a nine letter name, and she did say something to Lemony in SYBIS that he didn't catch. Granted, this messes with the timeline a bit, but considering thatLemony is lonely in both instances (the last chapter of both books) and that we never learn what the word/comment is, I think you could make it work if you were so inclined.

I think the other name that has been discussed is 'Armstrong'.

Oooooh that's a good one. I've never thought of Armstrong. I've tried Hangfire before, but it's too short.

I've always thought it was Ellington.

The problem I have with most answers to this conundrum is the question of why the figure in fog is calling out the name of X in the first place. If the figure is Ellington, why would she be calling her own name out of the blue? Or why would Hangfire be calling for a person he does everything in his power to avoid? Alternatively, who would be calling for Armstrong Feint? While I think that "Ellington" is probably the intended solution, I haven't the foggiest idea why it would be.

Actually, we don't know that the shouted word had nine letters; it is the Last Word, a distinct mystery and one of the hidden ones, that has nine letters.
I'm now wondering if the figure in the fog might in fact have been Kit. Or, if we don't take the picture as conclusive, Jacques.
