I have to say Reptile Room was the best looking and most exciting of all the episodes.

I don't have a lot to say, I liked the episode, it felt a bit long in parts but that's not a problem for me in this one. But can I just say that I loved the two powdered face women ? I find them highly entertaining !

When I read the books, I was always unsure about how Mr. Poe's leaping and babbling fit in with the rest of his character - but Freeman has tied all the (previously assumed by me to be disparate) parts of Mr. Poe's character in a way that I found very impressive. i think freeman's poe is more of a ditzy, effeminate dandy, with his over-groomed mustache and his constant inappropriate smiles. sometimes it works, but i definitely didn't think so in the TRR rant. that, and the whole coughing trait, goes much better with a fat, blustering type like the books and movie had.

I like Freeman's take on it because it subverts the posh, rotund banker image, which could be described as the stereotypical take on Poe (and wouldn't have been very impressive to see done again). It was interesting to see the unexpected interpretation of a scrawny man, dedicated to his career, poor at communicating and prone to panic attacks when things go wrong- a pathetic little man but still faithful to how he's described in the books.

I agree with Liam. I thought Freeman was great as Poe, for the most part, though I did wish he would have been a tad bit more animated in his rant in TRR. Compared to what I had in my imagination for that scene, he stayed a little still. Doesn't mean I didn't find it darn satisfying to see it depicted on screen anyway, though.

An interesting pair of episodes. Episode 3 tightened up the plot considerably, which gave them more room to expand the movie theatre sequence into something which was, even with the inclusion of the Zombies in the Snow material from the U.A., more original and exciting than I'd expected. Episode 4, on the other hand, was an odd experience, being so familiar with the books, as it's remixed and reordered in curious ways - but I'm finding that the troupe are excellent at stealing the show in Count Olaf's absence.

Though the tone of the show isn't how I would have done it, I admire they at least understand the source material and have a very specific vision.
The books are very very grim and isolating right from the start. People not recognizing Olaf is funny but in a very very morbid way and it's almost scary, this fear of nobody believing you because you're a child.
The show is definitely trying to have an ironic contrast between this "quirky' world and the horrible things that are happening, and I'm sure what they're doing is going to have it get darker and darker as it goes on as a progression, rather than starting completely miserable from the start. Which I'm okay with if they commit to it emotionally

Episode 3 was a bit of a giddy experience. Monty, his house, and the cinema felt like they emerged right from the pages of Lemonys books (TRR and TUA). Episode 4 was a bit cartoony and frequently subverted my expectations. A passageway in a hedge maze I can appreciate, but the whole end section felt either contrived or overly rushed ... didn't understand why Olaf would flee to Peru, rather than simply put on another disguise. Book 2 ended more gracefully with an extended goodbye to the reptiles.
Overall, Episode 3 genuinely charmed me, while episode 4 felt eclectic and I'm still digesting it. As fans we are both more prone to embrace and to criticize ... for me, this show has the same enthusiasm fo the source material that I do, so I can easily forgive even when it stutters or stumbles.

I was going to say I'm enjoying the series (just finished the 4th episode), warts and all, but I just can not get past those ridiculous subplots with Canning, Smulders, and Arnett. I'm trying to reserve judgement on the Smulders/Arnett thing for now since it's apparently going to have some sort of bait-and-switch involved, but the nonsense with Canning dressing up as a statue and telling the Baudelaires where to go was just irritatingly redundant. One thing I've always loved about the series is that the Baudelaires would rarely, if ever, do something important simply because an adult told them to. They would figure it out on their own. Here, it just comes off like the kids were trusting her simply because she seems friendlier than Olaf and more helpful than Mr. Poe (and also for plot convenience).
EDIT: Also agree with meinhard1 on the ending.

I felt Olaf was creepier as Stephano then himself. I like that in this episodes he seemed less goofy. I agree with a lot of people that I thought the maze plot was going to be bigger and have a grander reveal. Episode 3 was wonderful loved every moment and episode 4 was good but left something to be desired. I think I'm a bit in the majority but I'm loving the Parent scenes how they are always before or after some big event we will never.

Out of all the episodes in the first season, I think I enjoyed Episode 3 the most. The one they edited the book to make the story more concise and adding in the cinema scene - adding to our knowledge that Monty was aware of VFD code etc as well as the humour was just perfect. PERFECT.

Sorry, posted in the wrong thread! Did he appear in TBB or TRR as well?

I was thinking about this as I went to sleep last night. I don't remember Bruce being introduced. We know an actor is credited as him. And they have the scene where all the reptiles are being taken away but I found it odd they didn'tt have him make a little chit chat with the children or Mr Poe. Maybe I missed him but I feel like this is a misstep so when he shows up in TSS how are the children supposed to remember him.

I think they might have Bruce casually mention being a repo man when he first appears, and then later have the children vaguely recall seeing him there at the start. Obviously this wouldn't be a impactful, but it seems to be the only way they could really do it.
