I was wondering about this. I would imagine that they'll do one of the following: Introduce Bruce as a completely new character without pretending that he was in TRR; use a completely different returning minor character; or just plain have the Snow Scouts be unchaperoned.

I didn't actually notice Bruce's absence when I watched these episodes. I suppose when we get to TAA Bruce could appear at the school for some reason relating to Carmelita - perhaps she gets in trouble and the Baudelaires are waiting outside for Nero while he's talking to Bruce, for instance. Or they might change Bruce to someone involved in V.F.D., maybe someone we've seen before (the Snow Scouts camp out in a V.F.D. cave, and [ep 8 spoiler] Prufock might be a V.F.D. school , so they could be associated with V.F.D. somehow).

What is everyone's take on Monty recognizing or not recognizing Olaf? On first watch I believed he believed Olaf was a spy, but a friend thinks it was a fakeout along the lines of "If you think I'm stupid, you won't bother with me". Then again, Olaf has been aged by villainy, which could be why Monty doesn't recognize him.

Sort of like the chat with the children when stefani first arrived. I think this version of Monty was pretty cleaver and had a plan. sadly he let his guard down when they came back to the house because he didn't expect Olaf to come up with a new plan so quickly when he just stoped his previous one.

Aasif Mandvi as Monty was excellent, even better than Conolly's version I think. I'm still confused as to whether Jacquelyn is Kit under an alias, a genswapped Jacques (making Kit and Jacquelyn twin Snicket sisters), or if they're just consolidating both Kit and Jacques into one character for the show. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out. I know some people aren't happy with all the VFD things being introduced so early on, but I think this is closer to Handler's vision of the story since he didn't know at the start if he'd be contracted past book four. Most of the changes feel organic and often are bits of the supplementary material being woven into the main story.
I have to admit I laughed more than I should have when Poe reported the police were looking for an escaped cow from a local dairy farm, because it was such a great way to add in that part from the UAA. Freeman's Poe continues to steal the show when he's onscreen. Zombies in the Snow was more UAA goodness I was thrilled to have onscreen. It is looking now for sure that Violet is the only one of the siblings to carry Sunny, which is the kind of subconscious sexism one despises because it's so subtle. In the books we didn't see who was carrying Sunny unless it was spelled out and even if it was Violet she was the eldest, tallest, and strongest of the siblings. With Hynes being older and bigger it just looks more off-kilter and unintentionally sexist.
It's nice to have all the henchpeople having lines and personalities because it will hit harder later in the series when they disappear, though now I wonder how that will be handled since we've been getting some tweaks to the plot and character roles.

It makes me wonder if Hynes being older was the reason they decided to have Violet hold Sunny the most, to help visually imply she's the more mature and older one. I'm still a bit shocked they cast someone that old for Klaus, granted he doesn't really look 15 (not yet anyway).

On first watch I believed he believed Olaf was a spy, but a friend thinks it was a fakeout along the lines of "If you think I'm stupid, you won't bother with me". Then again, Olaf has been aged by villainy, which could be why Monty doesn't recognize him. My thought process while watching the episodes was: oh so Monty has recognised Olaf; it's strange how none of them explicitly say "Stephano is Olaf" though; [outside the movie theater] oh right, Monty didn't know it was Olaf. If I'm right, essentially all the Netflix series does is delay the realisation that Monty thinks Olaf is a herpetological spy. This is good for two reasons: one, it creates a big surprise when we realise Monty got it wrong; two, it explains how the Baudelaires don't try and hammer their point home any more obviously - they think Monty understands already. I suppose the disadvantage is that, like the books, it leaves the unexplained question "Why didn't Monty recognise Olaf?" I've seen plenty of explanations to this question when it's been asked in relation to the books (V.F.D. is a large organisation; maybe Monty went to a different training centre to Olaf; Monty may no longer associate himself with V.F.D. etc.) but you still have to wonder. But if Monty did recognise Olaf, I would wonder how on earth he could possibly have been stupid enough to confront him like that, and why he was outwitted by Olaf so easily. I hope it's not a spoiler to say this doesn't change in the rest of the season. I am similarly disappointed that this happens. I understand that with a camera following the Baudelaires one of them needs to be carrying her or we wouldn't be able to see her (compared with the books where she can crawl on her own most of the time), but Violet and Klaus should share the responsibility of carrying their sister. The only time I really remember either of them carrying her is in TEE - and Klaus specifically says they will take turns. That's how it should be.

I really liked these episodes. I love Aasif version of Monty!
NPH's Stephano is 100 times better than NPH's Olaf. I loved his acting, he was very creepy and scary at times, but being fun and stupid too. The first scene of episode 4 when he appears and gradually changes his voice is amazing.
When the kids found Monty's dead body and immediately the camera moves to Lemony, I thought they wouldn't show the corpse because of the kids blah blah. When they showed the body I was really happy! The makeup job was really good.
I love more and more the henchperson of indeterminate gender. Matty is a great actor and the character's vaccant stare and weird personality is charming.
Idk if it's a continuity error or what, but did anyone notice that the old man in the theater gives Monty a single ticket that says it's valid for four people, and when Stephano appears in episode 4 and shows the kids the tickets he has four?
I really enjoyed the changes they did. I like Monty being intelligent but still not being able to see through Olaf's costume, that's a key element in all the adults of the series: even when they mean well, they're not capable of doing the right thing.
The white powdered women are incredible and even when at first I wasn't sure about them being old, now I can't imagine them differently.

Everyone has so many thoughts about Violet holding Sunny all the time and while I do think subconscious sexism probably plays in as well as Violet being the eldest I've mostly been operating under the possibility that baby Presley just likes Malina more than Louis and is more docile with her tbh
Though Sunny is sometimes a doll so even if it's true that can't explain it entirely

Genswapped Jacques wouldn't make any sense considering the events of the Vila Village and how villagers think he is count Olaf.

I love you trip.
Also I think they'll change that thing of Jacques being confused with Olaf. I always thought that was pretty absurd on the books, I can't imagine Lemony having a brother who kinda looks like Olaf unless he's on disguise. I bet Jacques is pretty hot and without a monobrow irl.

Jacques never looked like Olaf, though. The whole point was that he looked completely different but just happened to have a monobrow (in addition to the tattoo of an eye on his ankle), and the Village of Fowl Devotees was too close-minded and incendiary to care that there was anything more to it.

Got a question for anyone who can answer - Valorous Farms Dairy gets mentioned in this and something about a cow going missing. I wondered if that was a reference to TUA or some other book later on. I had ASOUE and TUA a while ago and sold them. I re-purchasing them late next week so if anyone could tell me what page, chapter, book it's from that'd be great.
