# 1 - The Darkies
Edited By Mister M
Co-Edited by Linda Rahldeen & Lemona Snicket
With Thanks to Willis, Emma, and Anka.
Hello, and welcome to this, the first edition of 'The 667er Presents', an occasional new series of publications brought to you by the team behind the 667er, foccousing on one topic in minute detail. This time it's the turn of the Darkies.
For the last few weeks I have been going over every single poll, nomination thread, and award ceremony, and have scrutinised every tiny bit of detail to bring you this, the definitive guide to the darkies.
The main thrust of this issue is to combine the results from each of the previous 9 years worth of polls to find out who has been the most successful in each category, who has come close to winning the most, and who has won the most awards overall?
But there will be a few other things along the way as well, including some interviews by Linda.
This has been a lot of work. Most of this issue, unless otherwise stated, has been written by me. This means that there are bound to have been a few errors which have slipped through the net. If you spot any inconsistencies, then please feel free to correct me as soon as possible. My aim is to update this after each years Darkies and keep it us up to date as possible.
I hope you enjoy it

Perhaps this should be called the Mister Anklinda award? There are a lot of events that have been organised on 667 over the years.. I thought perhaps that a certain annual event could be the key to winning here, but no. Being a Big Brother could be a sure fire way of winning best organiser, but no, BB's only won in 2013 and 2014. Anka has organised the darkies and the advent calender and only won once. And I havent organised any yearly event.
Another interesting thing to note with this award is that the most decisive win was in 2013 (by linda) when there were also a larger number of voters, making it quite an achievement.

This is another award where one person clearly dominates. Perhaps we should call this the 'Most BSam' award? However, it's interesting how over the last four years someone new has won funniest member each year, either individually or tied with BSam. something else thats interesting if the fluctuation between BSam winning quite easily in some years, or the polls being more evenly split. In 2011, however, there were just 3 nominees and Bsam won with a colossal 17 votes, with LSWannaBe and Freebird tying for second place with 3 points. The year after, there were 7 nominees, all of them receiving at least one vote. But BSam managed to hold on, winning with 16 votes!

The Following was originally posted in 2014 as part of the Darkies 667er issue
A column by Linda Rhaldeen
Welcome back to History of 667. Today's topic of interest: the Darkies.
The Darkies are 667's longest-running awards show. They have been held annually since 2008, traditionally in the spring months (or fall for southern hemisphere). These upcoming awards will be the 8th ones. @moon hosted the Darkies in 2008 and in 2009. In 2010 he stepped down and Emma “Emmz” Squalor took over, also hosting in 2011 and 2012. Kit's tits kick ticks has been our organizer and host since 2013.
The first ever Darkies were held on April 13th, 2008. They were announced on March 27th, 2008; Willis tells us then that Hermedy had come up with the name. It was an exciting time at 667; the 667,000th post had just been made the previous day, and 667 had been upgraded to version 4.5 in the past few days as well.
At the time, The 667er was on its last leg (the final editon would be posted just 7 days after the award show), but it appears this first Darkies was well advertised by the paper, from a call for nominations to a vintage ad that was run in the April 6th and April 13th editions. Apparently I even wrote a news bulletin liveblogging the Darkies. This would be the last time a Darkies would be talked about in The 667er until today (I checked the issues during Charlie's run and found no mention of Darkies).
Let's look at some of the ways the Darkies have changed over the years:
-Looking at the original 2008 awards, you will see several that sound unfamiliar today, among them Best Moderator, Best Moment, and Best Gag Account.
-In 2009 those 3 were retired and replaced with Most Notorious, Most Improved, and Most Consistent.
-In 2012, Most Improved and Most Consistent were replaced with Best Profile Decoration and Most Active.
-In 2013, Most Active was changed to Best Organizer. Most Unfortunate also changed named to Most Lemony.
-In 2014, Best Story and Best Writer were merged into one award called Best Storytelling, and a special award that changes each year was created. This year's award was Most Missing.
-This year our special award is Most 13-Year-Old. A couple of the awards have undergone name changes, Best Storytelling changing to Best Writing and Most Lemony to Best Volunteer.

This award sort of morphed. It began with only a few threads, all of which received several votes - in fact, in 2010 there were only 3 nominees and 2 of them tied! As time went on, more and more threads were nominated, and now it's normal to have around a dozen nominees, some of which don't receive any votes. This award is also unique in that a person can be nominated more than once in the same year - Pandora holds the record by having 3 different threads nominated in 2015. This may be why Sophie has never won; she has had 8 threads nominated from 2012-2016, but 3 of the years had 2 each, which may have split the vote. Good luck to Sophie in 2017, I guess; maybe this will be the year you finally win!

Best Pairing is a beast to work through. So many nominations every year, so many people.... But this award is probably the most varied award. Every year throws up hundreds of new pairings, most of which dont return from year to year. In fact, the most votes a pairing has gotten over the 9 years is 12 - and that was Willis and Pandora, in one year alone.
I also struggled a bit on working out how to put this information out in a readable concise way. I've settled for mostly putting the information together on a person-by-person basis, instead of by pairing. Most pairings only have about 4 combined votes anyway.

Over the Years, there have been several awards which have appeared for only one year. It really wouldn't be worth writing an individual article for each of those awards, so I will talk briefly about them all here.
We'll begin with 2008.
In the darkies first year there were several awards which did not make a return the following year. These were Best Moderator, Best Gag Account, and Best Moment. I could copy out the results and voting for each of these awards, or I could just show you this lovely document (courtesy of Willis). This tells us that Gigi won Best Mod, newfoundlandtim won best gag account, and the Best Moment was daniel handler hanging up on Tragedy. Interesting.
But this document itself is also interesting, as the only real record of the 2008 darkies, it's definitely worth a look.
After 2008, there weren't any more one-time awards until 2014, when it became a regular thing to bring a new award for one year only. So far we have had Most Missing (which was won by Charlie), Most 13 Year Old (won by BSam and Tragedy), Best Out of Context Quote (Won by Comet and Lemona), Most Likely to Secretlz be Daniel Handler (which was won by Beatricetriptych and Alvaromolina), Best Person at Finding Out Stuff to do with the Netflix Series (That Probably Needs a Snappier Name) (Won by Gothicarchiesfan, Ryantrimble457)

Over the years there has been a lot of mentions of calling this the Dante Award, and you can see why. No other award in darkies history has been so consistently dominated by one person. Germes broke dante's six year domination in 2014, stealing the title by just one vote. Interestingly, there was a three way tie in 2015, were the smaller amount of voters led to a huge split across the board. Dante hasn't won individually in four years. Is it his time again?

This time we have not one but 3 interviewees, all people who are significant to the Darkies. First off we have Anka. Anka has been the Darkies organizer since 2013.
The 667er: Why did you originally decide to take over the Darkies?
Anka: Tragedy asked me to do that, after Emma was gone and I was still quite new on 667. I was really surprised and thought that would be fun, so I said I can do that
The 667er: This will be the fifth year you have been in charge. During that time, have there been any trends you have noticed?
Anka: hmm, not really. I think it's getting a bit less active every year, or at least since the second time. There are less nominations and votes and I found it quite shocking that this year nobody wanted to discuss any category changes.
The 667er: On a related note, what sorts of things have changed over the 5 years? What things have remained the same?
Anka: Hmm, I sort of answered that with the last question. Something that stays the same is that we always have great volunteers for presenting the awards, even if everything else is a bit more quiet.
The 667er: Being behind the scenes, I'm sure you see stuff that the rest of the public doesn't get to see. What is the funniest/most interesting thing that has happened behind the scenes?
Anka: I don't think there is much going on there to be honest 😀 But one thing that comes into my mind is that in 2013 I looked at who voted for some category, and I saw that Emma had voted, and I got quite excited about that.
The 667er: You mentioned this year that you had less free time now that you are done with school. Does this mean this will be your last year as Darkies organizer, or do you think you'll continue on?
Anka: I think I'm doing quite well with time this year, so as long as people don't mind I would like to continue.
The 667er: Do you ever vote in the Darkies yourself?
Anka: Yes of course. I try to vote at the start though, because I don't want to be influenced by other people's votes.
The 667er: And finally, is there anything we haven't covered that you want to say?

Best Story and Best Writer, now known as Best Writing, is an interesting category. Lots of people have won throughout the years, lots of people have been nominated, but mostly, willis has remained the most prolific - more nominations and wins than anyone else. Whats most interesting is that a lot of people have come close to winning but have never won, giving this category more variety than any other.

Most Improved is a fun little award, but only being around for three years means there isn't a huge amount that can be said about it. Only 2 people were nominated for the award in its first year though, which is pretty extraordinary.

Best Profile Decoration is the most recent award to join the darkies permanently, and over the years lots of members have been nominated. Each year, with the exception of 2012, there have been at least 10 people nominated. The voting has also been pretty split, with the winners only edging ahead by one or two votes each time.

Next we have Willis. Willis was the first host of the Darkies, in 2008 and 2009, and also the winner of a number of Darkies.
The 667er: You were the host of the Darkies for the first two years, in 2009 and 2009. Was it your idea to create the awards show, or someone else's and you just out it in motion?
Willis: It was my idea. I did it for 2 reasons. 1.Tragedy told me I couldn’t be gmod because I wasn’t well rounded enough on the site. 2.After the notorious Willis incident of 2008, Akbar said “Umm, swans, darling, maybe it's because Willis has never actually contributed anything major to, or worked for the betterment of, our forum. (link) That motivated me to do something to contribute for the betterment of the forum, and Akbar actually helped me with getting someone to present and with writing the template speeches for presenters. I’m still waiting to become gmod though. I’d also like to note that Tragedy named the awards, and is very proud of it.
The 667er: The Darkies is now entering its tenth year. Did you ever imagine it would run this long? Do you still participate?
Willis: I wouldn’t have thought it would last this long. I’m happy that it has and that Emma and then Anka have carried it on. I participate the years when I am around and active.
The 667er: How have the Darkies changed from 2008 to today? How have they remained the same?
Willis: Voting was way different in the first one because we couldn’t use polls for some reason, I believe because we either couldn’t do locked polls or polls could only have a set number of options that was fewer than the nominations we got. Another thing that I tried to do in the early days was to have prominent former 667ers come back to present some of the awards, which was doable because between the team squad and me we had enough connections. Nowadays I don’t think it would work as well, both because reaching out would be harder and the current people wouldn’t know who these people were.
The 667er: Most of your awards are related to writing, with 4 Best Story awards (2008, 2009, 2010, 2013) and 3 Best Writer awards (2008, 2009, 2010). Are your writing days behind you or do you plan to write more 667 stories? Do you write at all outside of 667?
Willis: I would like to write more 667 stories, or continue the multiple ones that I’ve abandoned, but I have a harder time being creative these days. I also think the majority of my past stories were essentially excuses for me to be rude to people who weren’t my friends and so in trying to be a better person, I have to work harder to actually clever and creative instead of just cheap and mean and I’m not sure I have that much skill. I write a bit outside of 667 but nothing that I would ever show to anyone.
The 667er: You currently have a deleted account. Are you participating in the Darkies at all this year, or are you planning on participating at all? Why or why not?
Willis: I am paying attention to them but I will not be able to attend. I haven’t decided if I will vote yet.
The 667er: You are nominated for 3 Darkies this year: Best Writing, Best Organizer, and Most Valued Poster. Which ones, if any, do you predict you'll win?
Willis: Best Thread for that one fruit tournament thread where Trip flipped out on Zortegus for cutting off the leaves of strawberries because that was my favorite moment in 667 history (link). Unfortunately it tragically went unnominated, so please everybody write in votes to undo this injustice. Of those three I guess Best Organizer because it would be funny to win that for making polls about fruit over the people who actually worked hard on things this year

Most Notorious is an interesting award in that over the years there has been a lot of debate over what counts as being notorious. All of the winners are notable in some way - either for their slightly off-beat posts or personality. Whats interesting is that every year the vote has been pretty split between all of the candidates. In 2015, only two of the 12 nominees received more than 2 votes.

For this special awards issue, Mister M has suggested that I write about award-winning fanfiction. In fact many of the stories I have already covered turn out to have been award winners, but I have found a couple which have not been covered yet.
Snicketfic of the Month: Number 14, by Q.R.V.
This brilliant work of interactive fiction, one of the most impressive works ever posted at 667, won the Best Storytelling award in 2014. A sequel to Thirteen Shocking Secrets, it invites the user to imagine themselves as Lemony Snicket, wandering the streets of Stain’d-by-the-Sea, investigating the theft of Cleo Knight’s car. A text adventure in classic mode, it has at its heart a logic puzzle, but many surprises confront us as we search for clues and try to report our conclusions. At first we do not even know how to begin our investigation, but no Snicket fan will find it hard to know where to go for guidance. Later we find ourselves in jail, and though, with difficulty, we can escape, any attempt to continue the investigation seems to land us back there. Nevertheless, it is possible to find a solution. There are many beautiful details (for instance, one of the suspects yawns when he cannot answer our question, one sniffs and one chuckles), and surprising answers when we give the wrong instruction, showing that the author had anticipated our every move. The game is still available, and there may well be aspects of it that no one has yet found.
667fic of the Month: A New Regime, by Sixteen.
Recent events at 667 may have reminded some of our longer-standing members of an dramtic incident in 2011, when Willis challenged Tragedy’s claim to the leadership. Later, Sixteen gave us a fictional version of these events, imagined as a conflict over the sovereignty of a small island. While in reality the crisis passed – though things were quite fraught for a while – and Tragedy was confirmed in power, in the story the events lead to the collapse of 667. Told in Sixteen’s inimitable style, this story gives an interesting insight into the history of our forum, and deservedly won the Best Story award in 2012.

There are a lot of artists on 667. Or at least, over the years, a lot of people have been nominated for best artist. A lot of people who are good artists have never won.
Interestingly, in 2016 there was a rise in the voting for best artist whereas almsot every other category took a dip. This is probably just a coincidence, but hey, maybe people are more interested in art than other things

Clearly 667 Values it's members. 12 people have won most valued poster over the years, including 5 people winning in one year, a record that i expect will go unbeaten for a while. But a statistic that sticks out is that everyone who has had more than 4 votes in this categry has won it. Thats pretty impressive.

We're almost at the end of this mountain of numbers of letters, and i'd just like to say a few things.
As I said at the start, it is my hope that this is something I can come back to after each years darkies and update, to see what the current standing are. It's also my hope to add in more stats for each year (Such as who has had the most votes and awards each year), or any other statistics which come to mind.
If you want to work out your own stats or contribute anything, then simply PM me or post in this thread and i'll edit it in. I might also put all the stats into spoiler tags later when I have time, to make it easier to navigate.
But, now, we come to
The Final Count
The following is a list of who has the most darkies over the years. I am organising the list in reverse order, and where people have the same number of darkies as each other, the highest number of votes receives a higher placing. In the event of two people having the same number of Darkies and votes, the person who has won the most individual darkies would go higher. If there is still a tie, it will be alphabetical. I ill also list all those who have no darkies first, with the votes included

And finally we have Dante, Burdensome Book moderator and winner of the highest number of awards.
The 667er: As I mentioned when reaching out to you, you have the highest number of Darkies that anyone has ever won - a total of 15 over the course of 9 years. Is this surprising to you? What are your thoughts on winning so often?
Dante: I was surprised on the face of it - but on further reflection, I am one of the longest-active members of 667 Dark Avenue, and in a very public role, so it makes sense that I would come in for a number of opportunities to be nominated or win awards. When you think of it as being one or two awards per ceremony, it's really more of a consistent than an excellent record. Had we but brought back Most Consistent this year!
The 667er: Many of your Darkies are for one particular award - Best Volunteer (or Most Unfortunate or Most Lemony, as it has been called in the past), which you've won every year except 2014 and 2016. Do you think you'll win it this year? Why do you think you won this particular award so often?
Dante: I doubt that I'll win it this year, personally. Although I'm generally thought of as presiding over Snicket universally, my assignment is more specifically as Burdensome Books moderator, and things have been quiet on the books side of things for the past year, and probably will continue to be so until the Netflix series wraps up. During those years that have been weighted more towards books, though, I've always made a point of being as meticulous in my unearthing and recording of information as possible, and consequently I've tended to be at the forefront of Snicket affairs. So long as there is the promise of new information out there, it's easy to get obsessive about seeking it; so long as canon needs a sentinel to safeguard the truth, my memory obliges me to take on that role, even should I fall to become a hater. There's less call for that at the moment, obviously, but the time has been that it was vital.
I don't think I ever robbed anyone of a victory they had truly earned. It's not that I wasn't concerned about doing so, though. I believe it was in 2014 that Germes won, and that was actually quite a happy coincidence, for I felt at the time that it was unhealthy for the Best Most Unfortunate Lemony Volunteer to be the same person for several years running (indeed, at the time, forever); had I won again I intended to recuse myself from future nominations for the award. Ironically, while I believed at the time that it would be my fifth consecutive win, it would actually have been my seventh, so all the better that somebody else got a look-in at last.
The 667er: In addition, you have also won Most Active (2012), Funniest Member (2015), Best Pairing with Antenora (2015), Best Thread (2012, 2013) and Most Valued Poster (2011, 2012, 2015). Were any of these a surprise to you?
Dante: Well, those were quite a few years ago now, so it's hard to say what I felt at the time - but it seems unimaginative to be surprised at winning when you know you're on the list. The possibility existed that I would win, so it will always have been under my consideration. I would point out, of course, that the first poster cannot necessarily take credit for a Best Thread victory; the award belongs as much to everyone else who posted in the winning topic. I am disappointed never to have won Best Writer, though, but that would require people to actually read my stories, and one can't ask for miracles.
The 667er: Your murder mystery story you wrote to present the Best Writer award kicked off the tradition of the Best Award Presentation award. Was that your intention? Do you remember what was running through your head when you wrote it?
Dante: Is it a tradition? I hadn't noticed, but it would be flattering to think that I had kicked it off. But to return to your main question, I thought it made sense to tailor the kind of speech I was writing to the nature of the award itself (as I later did for an overlooked and now missing Best Artist presentation), and as I had been given the full voting breakdown for the award then I thought that would make a suitable framework for a story. Restrictions and challenges can be excellent tools to create art.
The 667er: You have been a part of every single Darkies awards, from 2008 onward, either by winning or presenting at least one award each year. How active a participant are you in the earlier stages? For example, do you nominate, vote, etc. in the Darkies?
Dante: I vote where I have a preference, of course, and if I can think of a deserving nominee who hasn't yet appeared in the lists, I've always nominated them privately to make sure they stand a fair chance. Where I've often thought of my services as most necessary has been to fill the gaps in presenting awards, but often enough people are enthusiastic enough about the Darkies that my participation isn't required. For that reason, I'm taking more of a back seat this year, but I've made my votes where relevant, of course - though I don't believe I've ever voted for myself; that would be a frightful breach of etiquette.
The 667er: What sorts of things have changed about the Darkies over the years? What has remained the same?
Dante: Where would we be without bickering over the proper naming of categories - for which purpose the eventual institution of the Special Award has been such an admirable lightning rod? And let us not forget the fact that the awards are now sharing their name with a racial slur for a ninth year running, and I don't know what could be more important than that. How true to the spirit of 667 Dark Avenue that our annual awards show cannot be named in polite company!
The 667er: It looks like you were nominated for 3 awards this year - Best Volunteer, Best Pairing (with Germes), and Most Likely to Secretly Be Daniel Handler. Which ones do you predict you'll win?
Dante: I'm not truly expecting to win any this year; it's been a quiet year for me with much of my work conducted away from 667, and much of my inclination to participate long-sapped. But when one is coming up to one's thirteenth anniversary on a website, it's reasonable to think of the bulk of one's work as being completed, though at Tragedy's personal request I continue to serve as required.
So there we have it. Dante is the winner of the most darkies. But that could all change, of course. This years darkies will take place on the 20th May, and who knows what affect that could have on the current rankings?
This year's darkies will be the 10th overall. As we approach the 10th anniversary of the darkies themselves, i'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment and tell you that something is already underway to celebrate the darkies double-figure birthday. It should be fun.
The 667er Presents will return later in the year with it's second edition, which will continue to be edited by me.
The 667er will continue with guest editors until August when our new permanent editor will take over.
- Mister M
The 667er: With all the statistics completed, we discovered you won the second-highest number of Darkies, second only to Dante. Does that surprise you?
Willis: That is a surprising fact, but I guess it makes sense because I’ve been around since the beginning like few have. Also now I want to win these awards to pass him please.
