The official HarperCollins website is now listing an audiobook version of TBB for release on the 22nd of October, presumably this one. It's worth noting that this is yet another piece of Snicket merchandise we're receiving around October/November. Season 3 doesn't seem so far away now.

Yeah, so... where is this thing? I've been looking forward to it... The vinyl audio releases seem to have been scuttled, as I can't find much evidence of their existence after HarperCollins' initial press release from January. :Edit: A similar thing seems to have happened with the full cast edition of the Reptile Room. It was supposed to be released in the summer, but I can't find it anywhere now.

It's quite interesting to listen to as a one-off and I do think the fact that HarperCollins haven't seen fit to release the versions that were made for TRR and TWW is a bit of a shame. For anyone who has never listened to it before, here's a 6-minute sample of the full-cast TBB from the Audible website.

It has to be said that quite a few Lemony Snicket products have had a habit of never actually being released. TBB Private Library Edition, the full penny dreadful paperback range, a File Under print edition in the U.K. - and they halved The Complete Wreck's print run back in the day, too. I'd say the publishers lack confidence, but in some respects there's an identifiable lack of basic marketing competence, too.

Although the failure of the penny dreadfuls and the Complete Wreck is probably down to their proximity to the original publication, so that is arguably a marketing fail, yes. (I presume the Private Library Edition was cancelled because it was felt the world did not need yet another version of TBB.)

I have to say, I'm rather surprised at HarperCollins' reticence at releasing the full cast audiobooks at all.
I understand why they might not feel it worth justifying financially if they don't want to pay for the cost of printing TBB: Private Library Edition and the Penny Dreadful versions of books 4,5 [and 6?] or pressing the Bad Beginning full cast audiobook on Vinyl.
But they could easily release the full cast version of TRR [and TWW and TMM?] onto digital audio streaming, without having any physical manufacturing costs. They would literally not have to pay for anything since it's already been made and can be distributed without costing them a dime.

Thanks for keeping us up to speed on this matter, gothicarchiesfan; I'm not interested in vinyls myself, but I've enjoyed spectating this saga - and watching that item of Handler promotion, too.

Well, gosh, I totally missed this, didn't I? I'll have to get right on it.

When I said get right on it, I meant apparently, a couple of months later. When I heard about this, I was very excited and more than a little impressed, but when it actually arrived a couple of alarms started going off. TBB isn't a very long book, but there was only a single record... I began to wonder how abridged this would be, to only need a single record.
It isn't abridged at all, though. It just stops. Not even halfway through the book, I think. Side A lasts until they head to Olaf's, and Side B ends when they visit Strauss' library. Then you're meant to go online and type in a little code to listen to the rest of the book. More of a demo or a trial for the audiobook than any way to enjoy the story. I don't regret owning it, it's beautiful and a great ASOUE novelty. But I'd be lying if I said I weren't disappointed.
It would have been more expensive, sure, but I'd be willing to pay to have the whole story on vinyl.
