Hallo!
I know that no one will really be able to focus on anything but season two coming out TOMORROW (I know I can't, anyway), but I've been meaning to share this for positively months ... I went to the London comic con in October (I think it was October, anyway), and I wanted to dress up as Violet but do a more unique costume than just tying my hair up in a ribbon. So I decided to go as Violet in her Queequeg uniform!
I didn't really do that much for most of the costume -- I just used waterproofs, wellington boots, a laminated picture of Herman Melville and I WAS going to have rubber gloves but I didn't have time to get them.
But the helmet .... oh the helmet. I'm very proud of this helmet.
I made it from papier-mâché -- I blew up a balloon, and covered it in several layers of glue and newspaper, plus some card to make it really tough. Once it was all dry, I popped the balloon and cut away enough of the papier-mâché for me to be able to fit my head in. I added a bit more of the newspaper and glue, and then cut holes for the three little windows, and added more card, newspaper, and glue for the little sort of ridges around the side windows, and for the little door at the front. I used string to make little crosshatches across the windows, and to spell out V.F.D. on the front and QQ on the back.
I then painted everything in a mixture of browns, bronze, and gold. Once that was dry, I glued sheets of plastic across the three little windows, added a little metal hinge for the door at the front (though I glued it down by mistake so it doesn't open - but it would have been a bit fragile anyway so I don't mind), and varnished the whole thing in PVA glue to make it shiny.
And this is the result:
So, yeah! That's that. It was really, really fun to make this so I thought I'd share it. I really want to try making some other artefacts from the series ... any ideas for what I should make next?

And here I am in the full costume (I really like how the helmet highlights my nose. I think it's a new fashion trend just waiting to come 'In', as it were.):
