Even when it was for sad reasons, I got in touch with director Allan Arkush, who was in charge of "The Hostile Hospital" episodes of season two. I got to talk a bit with him about our community and he was very pleased to read our comments on the episodes he directed and the good reception they had. But sometimes the work of writers, actors, and even the art department people is very clear, while the work of the director might get lost to those who don't know much about this role and its importance. That's why I proposed him to answer some of our questions about directing the show and these two episodes in particular. I decided to follow B. 's lead and assemble a list of questions related to "The Hostile Hospital" episodes for him to answer. Wondering how it was to direct Neil Patrick Harris? Curious about how much the director had to do with the Baudelaires' acting? Do you want to know if he was the one who chose to give such dark tone to these episodes? Go ahead and ask! Anyone who has an account here is welcome to submit as many questions as they wish. If they are too many, I will assemble a small team of trusted associates in choosing the best ones, and these will be sent to him. I'm giving you a week to ask questions, so please try to have all your questions submitted either here or in a PM to me by 16th of May. Good luck!

By the way, one of the things Allan told me is that he "worked very hard on Hal's emotional arc and the orphans feelings about betraying him. And yes, it is a homage to "The Shining" at times, also "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" and my favorite all time comedy "Duck Soup""

This is excellent news!
Let's see, I'd be interested to know more about the character Babs. In the books she is completely absent, but they decided to expand her role for the show. I'm wondering if we haven't seen the last of her, but anything to tell about her would be neat!
I would also be interested in knowing why they decided to keep the henchperson of indeterminate gender from dying, but I could understand if Allan Arkush wouldn't be privy to that information.

Are we only asking Hostile Hospital questions? (I take it those are the only episodes he directed, if so this would be a very strange thing to only ask questions about).

Just to put together a solid baseline set of questions that address generic issues so far: - How did you become involved in ASoUE, and The Hostile Hospital in particular?
- Did you read the book, or concentrate on making the adaptation stand independently?
- What is your relationship with the writing team, and who has the most influence on the story?
- Which character or characters did you most enjoy working with in these episodes?
- Did you face any pushback on the horror theme? Were the episodes ever conceived of as lighter - or perhaps even darker?
Revisions welcome. And I know that you will do this anyway, Zortegus, but please thank Mr. Arkush on our behalf for this opportunity.

- Did the "grimy" look for Heimlich Hospital present itself, or was there a point in development where it was going to be a more typical clean-white hospital?
- None of us viewers could agree with how to interpret the Snicket File scene — so did Olaf burn it on purpose? Did he knock it over by accident? Did he knock it over out of anger without planning for it to catch fire? The world must know!
- Any interesting deleted scenes or elements you could share?

- How would the episodes be different if they weren't targeted at children? Would they be darker in tone, or have fewer comedic moments?
- Did you watch the first series of the Netflix show beforehand? How did past episodes influence the way this episode was directed?
- What have you previously directed that was most similar to the process of directing The Hostile Hospital, and why? Was there anything unique you experienced when directing the episodes?
- Did you have any direct contact with Daniel Handler during the process? Do you know how involved he is in the writing and filming processes?
- Four different directors worked on the five different "books" in this season.* Do you think having a variety of directors improves the show? Are there any disadvantages to doing this?
* TAA, TVV - Sonnenfeld; TEE - Welch; THH - Arkush; TCC - Peristere.

Re: Uncle Algernon Confusion about the projector confuses me It's undeniably clear that he knocks it down and smashes it up on purpose. The fire is unexpected, then he encourages it to burn. People who don't understand that must have eyesight that wasn't what it used to be. I like the suggestion of Allan revealing unused/deleted parts

Well, since these episodes are my favorites out of the season and yet certain parts made me extremely uncomfortable, I'd like to ask this : "Was there a particular scene that was especially hard to write/shoot, in terms of darker tones or the actors' performances/reactions to it?And If so, what was it and what was the thought process behind it?"
Good job on landing the interview, by the way!

We already have a number of terrific questions, and I'm looking forward to reading Allan's responses to them, so if my q doesn't make the cut, I'm ok with that. However, despite being the only one to care, I'd like to know whether Klaus' fake doctor name tag, "Dr. Faust", was a direct reference to the same detail in Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive"?

I’d like to ask about if it was a challenge to find that mix of horror and comedy. Hostile Hospital could have very easily been too scary and not funny enough, but it felt like a really good blend.
