In this thread you can make suggestions for the special award category of this year. It should have something to do with the year, either the year 2018 (or the number 2018 or 18) in general, or something that happened in the past year in the forum or Snicket-related or in the rest of the world.
When you post your ideas, please say how they are related to the year, even if you think it's self-explaining.

well immediately i think all our minds turned to linda.... personally i think the special category tradition should be replaced with a memorial award of some sort honoring her. like "The Linda Rhaldeen Award For Excellence In ______" idk what it would be though, because a lot of the most obvious linda-like qualities are already awards (compassionate, organizer, etc.)

I agree with bear. I'd like to suggest an award honouring Linda's activism, awarded to someone who has put notable effort into improving the conditions of marginalised or oppressed people. It would still have things in common with the Most Compassionate and Best Organizer awards (in fact it seems kind of like a combination of those two qualities), but I think it's distinct enough to work as its own thing. I know we're a small community, so we're unlikely to have either Nelson Mandela or Rosa Parks on here (for multiple reasons), but there's still a lot of good people here, and I'm confident there's people here who deserve such an award. Linda, for example, certainly did.

This is a beautiful idea, but I'm actually rather doubtful for a number of reasons about how well it would work:
- I'm not sure how many plausible candidates there really are: Linda was unique. I can think of one other person who would have been a good candidate, but they haven't been here for a long time. - Normally these awards are for things we do in the forum: we would have to know a lot about people's personal life to assess how suitable they are for this award. - There's something odd about an award like this being given competitively; I'd have thought it would work better as a juried award, with judges able to go looking for someone suitable (which would help with point 2 as well).

Of course what I thought of first is Linda too, but then I thought of the same things Hermes and Comet said. I think Linda will be really present in every (if not all) presentation and messages throughout the awards ceremony.
I was gonna say that the award could be related to the Netflix show, but it would make sense to do it next year considering the show will be probably over by then.
Considering last year's special category and also honoring Linda's idea (which I personally loved) I suggest "Most Likely To Be Trip From The Future".

I agree with Hermes: I think the Linda award idea is lovely, but I'm not sure how it would be judged because people may not share their charitable works on this forum, and also the idea of it being competitive seems a bit off. However, maybe an award in Linda's memory for something like 'most helpful' would work? Unless that's already an award -- I can't remember all the categories. But I think 'helpful' sort of summarises the idea of an award for charitable endeavours but brings the focus back to the forum a bit more, because anyone can be helpful on here but we can't really know about charitable stuff unless we know all the members personally. EDIT: I want to add that I don't want to be presumptive: I didn't know Linda nearly as well as many other people on this forum, so if the special award does become a memorial award for Linda, obviously there will be many people who will know what sort of award she would have liked better than I do. This is just something I thought could work.

Most Mysterious would be a good one, though Dante would win by default.

It's only a mystery if the answer is interesting.
I was going to suggest some kind of award for general excellence, perhaps as a kind of substitute for Member of the Year, but that's really already covered by Most Valued Poster. Another possibility might be something along the lines of "Most Missed," for those members whose absence is most regretted; though that might place too much emphasis on a person's absence, rather than remembering and celebrating their presence.

'Most missed' or something like it is one we have had before.
I quite like the idea of 'Most Mysterious', but does it have any particular connection with the year?
'Most Helpful' is quite like the already existing 'Most Compassionate', which we generally interpret in quite a broad way.
Can someone explain to me how 'Trip from the future' originated? I am rather puzzled about why anyone would be Trip from the future. But if it was Linda's idea, I think having it this year as a memorial to her would be a good plan. We remember her as compassionate, as an organiser and as a writer, all of which have awards, but her humour deserves to be remembered as well.

But we already have an equivalent of MOTY in Most Valued Poster.
And I wouldn't assume that MOTY is dead. I'm hoping, once the marking season ends and I have a bit more time, to put some work into reviving things at 667, and MOTM, with its offshoot MOTY, strikes me as the sort of thing that could be made to work again quite easily.

I really like qll these ideas but particularly the idea of renaming MVP (or maybe Most Compassionate?) after Linda Hermes "Trip from the future" was a running joke between me/Zort/Linda, I think originating from the most recent 667 Big Brother season or the one before, that any unknown entity was me from the future, or if some mysterious thing happened it was caused by my future self. Linda liked the joke a lot, though it hadn't been used by any of us in I'd say almost a year at this point

Yes, I'd happily go with renaming MVP. (But of course this doesn't help us find a special award for this year.)

Renaming MVP for Linda sounds good. A permanent award in her name definitely seems right.
Related specifically to this year, maybe something for whoever's done the best work finding & sharing details about the Netflix adaptation? It might be a bit too similar to MVP & Best Volunteer, though, but in general I think something related to the show would be good, as it has dominated much of the activity on 667 for the past year.
