Finally listened to "Some Rap Songs," and happy to say it lived up to my expectations from the early released songs. Good, tight album (actually wish it were some 10min longer), major throwbacks to 2000s backpacker hip hop (reminded me esp. of Madvillainy, for some reason).
I didn't listen to many 2018 records, so this is my short list out of maybe 5 or 6 from this year I listened to: 1. Ty Segall - Freedom's Goblin 2. Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs 3. Vince Staples - FM!
(I did discover lots of great non-2018 music this year, though)

the songs are short and almost entirely sample-based, but several producers have done that, no reason to pick madlib over j dilla or summit. as for the raps i think this is the least he's sounded like mf doom in his career. lyrically, far less wordplay and/or word salad for the sake of rhymes, far more personal; and technically, he's got some great modulations in his delivery and flows that i haven't heard before. on older stuff, admittedly, the doom influence was pretty obvious, but i think it's about time nerds keep that fool's name outta their mouths!!

(reminded me esp. of Madvillainy, for some reason). lol I promise I didn't see that comparison being made before I made it myself. It's not (just) the shortness of the songs, but the choice of the samples and how they're used. I wasn't really comparing Earl's rapping to DOOM's there (although Earl's tone and delivery do contribute to the Madvillainy-flashbacks), as I think he is carving out his own style (which obviously has its influences like everything). I have yet to delve into the lyrics, though, in order to digest them properly (that sounded gross).
