I just relised as i was watching the movie that they are giving away infomation from future books. I know this has already partly been discussed but some of what i have to say is new.
1. the shop olaf stops at is called the last chance store wich is from book the eight.
2. when the orphans walk into their home at the begining klaus saw his fathers watch glass and it doesnt mention that untill book the tenth. in the movie when it is filming klaus pick the watch glass up there is a sign that says VFD next to it.
why are they doing this? i think it gives the story away for the people who have only read the first few books.
3. uncle monty has a spy glass in the movie and when klaus tries to mention it to him uncle monty ignores him. Once again there is nothing about a spy glass in first three books.
At aunt josaphines house there is a picture of the whole VFD society and it shows LS but it does not show his face like usal. jaques snicket and the baud. parents are there along with monty the sualors olaf and all the other gardians. aunt jose even tells them what VFD stands for. i find this abit odd that the movie is giving away the story line but oh well.
please reply to this with your thoughts.
P.S. My name is Quigley

Perhaps it's because they only had one movie to cover three books and foreshadow eight more. And I assure you, the spyglasses and their V.F.D. symbolism is movie-only.

And, hey, it's fun for the people who've read all the books to say "Look, it's the Last Chance General Store" or "It's the Littlest Elf, SQUEE"*. We then have an advantage or whatever over the other moviegoers. It also acknowledges the other books.
*I was doing this through out the opening scenes. My other friends were wondering if we in the right movie. I was cackling with joy.

They have to foreshadow, otherwise there's no mystery. In the beginning, I was like "What is this? I-HEY! IT'S THE LITTEST ELF!" And then Jude Law, well...

My uncle and sister told me I was going to go see darkness. I started to wonder when a mother brought her four-year-old. Then, after I saw the Littlest Elf appear, I knew the true fate of my afternoon.

I have heard that Handler only planned on writing four books and didn't incorporate the V.F.D. until later, so perhaps the movie is making up for that.

i hope they do all the books, but then, they'll have to do the last 4 books in movie... and i guess the second movie might be called Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Part II or something...

If they do make a sequel I hope they come up with a more original title.
It's all right if there is foreshadowing. The people who haven't read the books won't know what they are, anyway.

I have heard that Handler only planned on writing four books and didn't incorporate the V.F.D. until later, so perhaps the movie is making up for that. I've heard that as well; alternatively, that he had planned to write a trilogy. It's interesting how the movie is creating a new VFD mystery, similar to but separate from the one of the books. And I hope there is a sequel in which we learn more about this.

I am glad they brought V.F.D into it so early it will make future films more interesting.

Well, if you think about it, they didn't really follow the original storyline anyway, so it doesn't really matter much if they give that away. It also does give us 'from-the-start' readers a little bit more amusment to watch it, because the movie itself, in my opinion, was a put-down.

I though the movie handled the task of putting three books in one film pretty well, although I wished it had been longer and not so rushed. They did change the storyline, but that was necessary because of the cliffhangerish way in which all these books end.
Anyhow, the movie's not in the same "universe" as the books, so book clues can't be applied to the movie, and vice versa.
