Olaf's TGG laugh seemed like a one-book sort of joke, anyway, and it's probably too late in the series to introduce a new running gag that'll be with us for a long time.

TGG seemed very introverted to me - if that makes sense - whereas B12 looks far more social. So I guess what I'm saying is that Olaf and Esmé might have gone slightly mad down in their submarine swimming around looking for old enemies to kill, whereas they'll have to be slightly better-behaved, at least for a while, at Hotel Denouement.

You have a good point--TGG took place mostly inside various submarines, in a fairly confined setting. Everyone acted a little strange because they'd been cooped up for some time, and they'll probably be more sane in the hotel.

Yes, that's a good point. I know I'd be quite tense were I stuck in a submarine for any long period of time...
Edit: Although I highly doubt that using Olaf and Esme's ridiculous laugh would help relieve stress in any manner...

Being trapped in a sub can make one a little claustrophobic...... even insane. Hopefully everybody will have adjusted to good old dry land by Book 12 and are now sane. (I hope.)

I just had a thought on character insanity: Olaf is acting silly because he's tired, and hasn't gotten enough sleep. He's in a condition that I've variously heard referred to as being "grunk" or "binky". But then again, the Baudelaires seem to have gotten even less sleep than him recently, and they're still quite sane.

Maybe the woman and man with either hair or a beard have been putting under pressure to get the sugar bowl causing him to go a bit loopy

Also, I just remembered that Olaf had several cases of wine on board the Carmelita. In addition to being tired and insane, he was probably drunk as well. Esmé too, although Olaf said he'd drink all the wine himself. Maybe she was just childishly joyful at Carmelita's presence.

And Esme's probably acting childish to amuse Carmelita, whom she think of as a daughter, almost.

The Bauds are used to not getting enough sleep, though, especially in TAA. Olaf's not as used to it. So he may be grunk, or he may be under pressure, or he may be going claustrophobic from being in such a small place, or he may be drunk. Maybe he's under pressure and claustrophobic, making him scared so that he can't sleep, and he's worried and junk so he's drunk now, too. (It's possible!)

TGG was my least favorite book of the series. Olaf's laugh put me in an oddly bad mood all day, considering he's just a fictional character.

I'm sorry, but when Olaf said "Tee-hee turncoat!" I laughed. Retrospectively, I have no idea why. I just did.
Bah, I'm going to shut up, I sound so stupid.

Yes! Exactly! The Baudelaires spent too long in B11 complaining about their situation. Now don't get me wrong, I'd have died long ago in that situation, but does DH think that's what the readers want to see? Time after time again? Honestly.
And to Brian...welllll...how long has it been since you read the first book? Maybe you've changed. Your opinion (I'm guessing, cuz mine does) changes over time of certain people, especially as you get older. For instance, when I read B2 and B3, I didn't care that Monty died. But in the movie, I did. Well, mostly because I liked the actor and Uncle Monty in the books drove me insane, but do you get the point?! Kay. I'm done now.
