Let me answer your first question. Olaf WAS in V.F.D. That's why he has the tattoo. When the schism occured, he joined the "Bad Side" that starts the fires. I sometimes think that it might have been Olaf who caused the schism.

I disagree...(for the sake of disgreeing) It was Lemony and Beatrice who started the schism.... i have no proof but i like the idea...oh and remember there is no right or wrong side to the schism, there are those who start fires and those who let them out

Olaf was definitely in V.F.D., and was definitely instrumental in the organization's division. "...recently this organization has experienced a schism, a word which here means 'a member suddenly behaving in a greedy and violent manner and thus dividing the organization into two arguing groups. The member I am speaking of - I will just call him O..." UA p 123. Jacques, at least, most equates the schism's cause with Olaf's behavior.
I don't think there's much doubt that Olaf was in V.F.D. Esmé is the one I'm not sure about. I had a theory that Olaf brought her in after the schism and she was never an official member, but then there's the fact that she was supposed to be reading Anna Karenina one summer, a V.F.D. task, apparently.

That's who O is. Olaf. E is most likely Esme.

Maybe he/she simply hasn't read the Unauthorized Autobiography. That's where most of us figured all that stuff out, and I would be confused if I hadn't read it either.
