News from Iraq The US military forces in Iraq are now arresting civilian relatives of Saddam Hussein's associates. The article details the arrest of the wife and daughter of Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, described as a "deputy" of Saddam's. And this isn't the first time it's happened. According to the article, "American forces have frequently arrested relatives of fugitives ... as a way of putting pressure on the wanted men to surrender." If the situation involved any other military than ours -- if some other government were arresting civilians to force their relatives to do something -- we'd call the detainees what they are. Hostages. American forces have begun taking civilian hostages in Iraq. There are no words to express the sorrow and anger I feel right now.

Um, well here in Japan, I feel unhappy. I don't really want to be an American anymore. It is too upsetting. Too shameful. Most people want to be An American, but I don't think it is really good. Yes there is freedom, but........

I'm glad others feel the same way I do. It makes me feel really horrible that I live in a country that would do those terrible things after opposing them for so long. I just want to move out of the country and change my name, it's so embarrassing. But, anywho...Do you think that this whole "war on Iraq" would have happened had Bush not been elected President, or do you think it would have happened regardless?

I don't know. They must have been planning it for a long time and so they probably would have done it anyway, but it probably wouldn't have gone so far.

I think the war in iraq was in some ways enivitable, although i think our continued presence there is definitely something that would enrage me if i was an iraqi citizen. Seriously, if a military was taking civilians as hostages, i would be enraged. You should also consider the sources from which everyone gets their information. Iraqui people get information from iraqui sources which may or may not be heavily distorted, which is not to say that united states sources aren't incredibly distorted. The so called well-informed citizens only get their information from the media and in rare cases, friends or relatives in iraq, which is still questionable content(censoring, and the source of THEIR information). Everything we beleive or feel about the war is based on what we've heard from ourselves, no matter how you fit into the sterotypical checkboxes. No offense is meant by any of this, and i'm sure most of you could have predicted everything in my argument. StinkyPanda, do you read a lot of the Japanese newspapers? That's an amazing place to be when the US is at war.

i guess that would make the arrests legal, but not any less disturbing.
Living anywhere besides in the countries directly involved would be amazing. The stories would be a lot less biased and less prominent. And living in Japan would be diferrent than living in like france, becuase there IS a heavily prominent"national opinion" about this war.

I could probably rant and rant about this for a long time but I'm tired right now. Let's just say I didn't like going into Iraq in the first place, I thought it was bad then and I think it's just gotten worse.

Whoa, really? Either you've played a joke on me or I really don't follow the news at all My dad told me that Bin Laden needs kidney dialysis... which is a very complex medical procedure that needs a kidney dialysis machine, and he has to go use it frequently. If we were really trying to look for him, then how many of those machines could there be in Iraq for his use?! Sorry if my facts are wrong...

Yep. Bush needed to capture Saddam, now he has a change of being elected again since he came through with what he'd been trying to do. Great.
