It figures that Handler wouldn't be the only one to have the idea, assuming he came up with it independently. Thanks for introducing that to us.

lemony said onece that he could play 'bizzare love triangle' on the accordion, i looked up the song on wiki and it was written in the 70's; so i don't think it was in the 30's, of course

I guess it can't be any earlier than the '70s, then.

There was also reference made to Stockholm Syndrome, which occurred in the '70s. Of course, it could just be when Lemony Snicket was writing the book - rather then when the Baudelaires were going through their ordeal. I really do like the idea of ASOUE taking place in the '70s, though.

Well freakshows, were popular, or at least not banned.

Do you know when freak show were banned? Did they still have freak shows in the '70s?

Yes. They were banned in the 1980's, I would've thought they were banned earlier though.

It doesn't fit to me, ASOUE being on the 70's.

I agree with Freddy. I always imagined it to take place in the 30's personally, and Lemony also mentions world war 1 once

Maybe we should come up with a list of good reasons for it to take place in each decade between the 30s and the 90s. For me, though, '70s and '80s seem to work best.

I guess it varies person to person. Snicket never states the time period so it can't be that relevant. The list sounds like a good idea.

In my opinion, I do think the '90s would be sort of pushing it. It can't be any earlier than the '30s, due to Klaus' mention of the 1920s in The Miserable Mill - as if the 1920s were in the past.

It is interesting how many of us here have different ideas of when ASOUE took place. Some even set it after 1999, even though the first few books came out in that year - but they're probably the ones who got into the series later. I don't remember exactly what year The Beatrice Letters came out, but you also have to count back ten years from when that book came out to get the latest possible year the series could've ended.
I'm of the belief that Heimlich Hospital actually was named after Henry Heimlich, in-universe - instead of it just being an out-of-universe allusion to him. So that's part of why I think the '70s or '80s would work best.

I know this probably doesn't matter but ASOUE seemed awefully oldy woldy in the movie. Should I create a thread for the ASOUE time period?
