"Your parents," Mr. Poe said, "have perished in a terrible fire. The children didn't say anything. "They perished," Mr. Poes said, "in a fire that destroyed the entire house. I'm very, very sorry to tell you this my dears." Boring paragraph concerning Violet's thoughts and then, "Perished," Mr. Poe said, "means killed."
Last night, while thinking about A Series of Unfortunate Events, I realized just what Mr. Poe said. 'Perished' actually means 'died', so why would Mr. Poe say they had been killed? There is a huge difference between the two after all. I think it is because the Baudelaire parents were murdered. Wasn't there a secret passageway from 667 Dark Avenue to the Baudelaire Mansion? Could it be that it was...oh, you know what I am about to say.
I apoligize if this has been discussed before. Your comments and thoughts, please.

It has sort of been discussed before, but you've brought some evidence I haven't herad before for Mr. Poe being involved in VFD. Interesting thought. It COULD just be that Mr. Poe is too stupid to know the actual meaning of words... Perished: 1.To die or be destroyed, especially in a violent or untimely manner. 2.To pass from existence; disappear gradually. (Dictionary. com) Perished says nothing about being "killed" or "murdered", only about dying. Or, it could be that he actually knows something the young Baudelaires don't (ie: that they were killed). Which means he's either part of some part of VFD... or in league with part of VFD (be it good or evil).

I've always considered that to be nothing more than a slip of Mr. Poe's tongue or Mr. Snicket's pen. It's true that the Baudelaire parents were killed by the fire, and I also believe that Olaf started it. Hence, one could say that they were murdered.

It could be said that the fire killed them...I believe strongly that it was murder. The elevator was shut down by Esme...possibly so she could access the mansion? Olaf loves fire...he could have done it. Definitately someone on the evil side of the schism.

If it helps any, I think they said that they just moved to 667 Dark Avenue "a few weeks ago", but I'm not sure if this will give us a clue to when they were married. I should go reread TEE.

Swans, keep in mind that the whole series takes place over the course of about 2 months (from 1 - 13)
It is possible that it was esme

I think Mr.Poe has no idea about VFD. In LSUA, there is a part where Lemony wrote down what he heard on that tape, and it was Mr.Poe and Eleanora, his sister. The waitress said "I didn't realize this was a sad occasion", and Mr.Poe didn't know what he was talking about. He sounds pretty clueless to me, or else he's lieing about that so he doesn't have to say the phrase after that to get the files in front of his sister.

The other problem with Mr. Poe on Briny Beach, is how did he know the Bauds were there in the first place? I doubt the parents would have called Mr. Poe to tell him they were at the Beach before they "accidentally" died in a fire. I think Mr. Poe was involved in setting the fire and the parents told him.

Maybe Poe just knows that they go there a lot.

Maybe the parents told Mr. Poe beforehand that the children were going to the beach that day, but why? I think it's possible that Mr. Poe is allied to Olaf, and sometimes tells him where the children have been sent(when Lulu doesn't know).

Remember also, it was a cloudy, cool day and the beach was not busy. It would be an unlikely place to look for the Bauds if Mr. Poe was just guessing.

Maybe he asked random pedestrians and others nearby if they'd seen the three Baudelaire children. This is very confusing.
