I guess the unibrow counts, even though Jacques is stated to not resemble Count Olaf in any other aspect. Actually, it's more like a parody of this sort of plot device.

Ike's mother also had the unibrow - and the family tree, read the most straightforward way, suggests the Anwhistles are related to the Snickets and Olaf.
There's also a rather more abstract resemblance between Ike and Beatrice, in that they can both whistle with their mouths full - the way Josphine puts it suggests it was a family resemblance. (Ike could be be related to Beatrice through hsi father and to the Snickets through his mother.)

Whether he is related to the Baudelaire's or not he knew about their giant fortune (obviously everyone could see their mansion!) but it is possible he forged a will or even made the Baudelaire parents write the will in order to get it. However, then why would it not say Olaf specifically? Maybe so that it wasn't so obvious as he knew that he was the closest geographically and that they would be sent his way. Being as villainous as he is he could have easily came up with a plan to fake a will. I suppose we'll never truly know

is it possible that they wrote their will, knowing that Olaf was closest geographically, before the schism and just never updated? I cant really remember as its been a while since I read the whole series but weren't all of VFD friends once? So before the schism they wouldn't mind that Olaf would be the first guardian to the children? Therefore after the schism they never updated it and were killed allowing Olaf to get the children and give him a chance at their fortune (whether they are related at all or were just VFD friends back in the day!)

V.F.D. was a united organization until the schism, which, according to TPP, happened early in the adults lifetimes. It's therefore doubtful the Baudelaire parents wrote the will with Olaf in mind. It's more likely the Baudelaire parents thought Mr. Poe would have the sense to know that "close" meant "close to the family" and not "in geographical proximity." Good point that the will didn't say Olaf specifically; that seems to support that the will was written a long time ago.

It's not clear that the will actually mentions closeness at all; the conditions given in TBB (Chapters Two and Thirteen, I think) are that the children should be raised in the most convenient way possible, and that they must be adopted by a relative. "Convenience" is quite easy to misinterpret, though.

I agree. Mr Poe being the rather clueless banker he is, probably misinterpreted the will/parents wishes. I am certain Beatrice and Bertrand would never have intentionally sent their children to live with Count Olaf. As for Olaf's "relation" to the Baudelaires it mentioned he is either a "third cousin four times removed" or a "fourth cousin three times removed." I'm not even going to begin trying to work out what that means, but I guess one could argue that all VFD members seem to be losely related one way of another.

I think it's possible that Olaf forged the will in some way, perhaps when he was visiting the parents on the day of the fire(and left a wet mark on the table with his drink glass). How did you get the picture at the end??
