They were too shocked to cry; the news was too sudden and too difficult for them to understand.

The orphans do face a lot of unfortunate events and never seem to be emotionally traumatised or even shaken. But as Snicket said in TSS, he believes the Baudelaires should have some moments of privacy, and I'm sure that there are times when Violet, Klaus and Sunny cried together, even if we did not read about it.

They do cry in the books, though. I remember at one point in TBB, they were all in their room and they cried. And, as Sixteen pointed out, I'm sure there were 'behind-the-scenes' moments where they cried.

And there was also that emotional moment in The End,where the Baudelaires and Kit Snicket cry.

There actually seems to be a lot of crying in the books. Klaus seemed to cry in just about every book, and Violet also seemed to cry quite a bit. Lemony Snicket seems to cry a lot, too - even though I doubt Daniel Handler cries as much, in real life.

That would have been an awful April Fools Joke, kingofvfd... And as I recall, Klaus *was* very emotional... One moment that springs to mind is Klaus' Birthday in the cell in TVV.

To my recollection, throughout the books (the early books, at least), Klaus is generally more emotional; Violet performs well the role of elder sibling in keeping calm and collected more of the time.

i agree i think that there are a lot of "private moments" that the BO had where they did cry but snicket didn't put them in the books because they should be private

Yes, I agree that some of those 'private moments' may have included crying. I think those 'moments' are the author's 'excuse' for things that readers might question as to why they aren't mentioned, for example them going to the toilet (!). And as has been said, it's in addition to when their crying is actually mentioned. But Handler also emphasises how brave and strong the orphans are in comparison to someone perhaps more ordinary as himself. Maybe they're just emotionally strong siblings- people deal with such things in different ways, like I myself have experienced many deaths in the family, but my nerves provoke laughing rather than crying.

I think it's shock. When my grandad died three years ago, I didn't cry at all. It's just up 'til recently, I've become emotional about it. Seriously, since The End I've been emotionally-crippled.
