In the shreds of the Kind Editor letter in The Hostile Hospital, we see that 1319.5 miles is equal to "DOOBY kilometers", a rather unusual notation.
Since there are 1.6 kilometers in a mile, 1319.5 mi=2111.2 km. Therefore, DOOBY=2111.2. If each letter stands for a digit, D=2, O=1, B=1, and Y=2.
Assuming my findings are anything close to the truth, we are left with the peculiar question of why Lemony chose to write his metric-unit values in a redundant letter-for-number code. Discuss or something.

This is a very strange observation. How did you come up with it?
Also, why is it that when I work with this a little it somehow ends up spelling out RING...o shi

Wow. That's an awesome finding. I've been wondering about that for a while now...great observations. So....maybe he could use it again, you think? Maybe in the later books....he might let us find a code, or something, like you found.

How did you get "RING" from DOOBY kilometers?

I had a calculator, and English-Metric conversion chart, and ten minutes not otherwise occupied. How did you get "RING" from DOOBY kilometers? I didn't, I ganked that from Spiral. Sorry to disappoint. But to produce something for this conversation: If, say, you put them in alphabetical-numerical order, like D = 4, O = 15, B = 2 and Y = 25, you get 41515225 miles. If you add them all up you get 62. 62/1.6 = .625 41515225/1.6 = 25947015.625 "/62 = 669600 2111.2/62 = 34.051(possibly: D = 3, O = 4, O = 0, B = 5, Y = 1?) A few interesting calculations in case people want to use this as the basis for something.

I just did a quick Google search for "Dooby kilometers", and found not even this page. Maybe if I uppercase it it'll work; I'll try later. However, a search for "Dooby" brings up pages about Scooby Doo, doo-wop songs, people with "Dooby" in their nicknames, and some things I didn't even want to know about. Apparently the word "dooby" is rather versatile.

maybe its just the weird kind of measuring system (other then metric as we know from TAA) that they use in Snickets imaginary world.
