I think they were just plain stupid ignorant people.

I think they joined Olaf because for once they seemed to be accepted as normal by their peers. The carnival attendees and Madame Lulu would have undermined their self-esteem horribly. And they had probably been treated like that their whole life. They would jump at any place where they would be treated as equals.

They probably disliked being picked on and laughed at all the time. I know some of the users here really disliked Kevin - but I think it's not so much that he hated being ambidextrous per se, but that he hated the fact that being ambidextrous made him a target of ridicule.

I figure that Hugo, Colette and Kevin all joined Olaf's troupe not only because everyone picked on and laughed at them their entire lives, but also because they were talked into it by Esme.

Well, yeah, they probably haven't encountered too many friendly faces in their lifetime - so, from their viewpoint, Esme was probably the first friendly face from a non-freak that they've seen in a long time. The Baudelaires don't really count, since they were apparently fellow freaks.
I think, when you're a part of any marginalized group of people, to see a supporter from out outside the marginalized group can feel so encouraging. Before that, they probably felt that the only people who would even accept them would be other freaks.

Esmé was the first person to be nice, so they had an excuse reason to join- though it's a little annoying,, how in he books afterwards they still complain.

they are just some poor little guys that had no choice but to follow suit through the mentality. but eventually, they were made to show us something we can not notice though it is obvious everyday. (-__-)

I think they just didn't like how their "deformities" had made them the object of ridicule. They were probably tired of being thought of by many as "disgusting freaks".

I myself have always been quite sensitive about the idea of people not liking me, so I can definitely relate to how the freaks must've felt. It can really hurt to feel as if hardly anyone likes you.

I completely agree. The feeling of insecurity is a powerful feeling and can cause a person do things that may seem irrational. Really, they're just searching for a way out. :/

I think they were just persuaded, and it caused them to make a bad choice. I agree that they were plain ignorant, and the fact they'd throw some lady in a pit just to make their lives better is selfish, even if the lady isn't particularly nice to them. They should have listened to the Baudelaires-- except they were kind of cut off by Esmé.

Well, at that rate, I think they were pretty much giving up on humanity - so it did seem like most of humanity hated them for no other reason than being "freaks". Actually, I can't really blame them for wanting to kill Madame Lulu - since she probably treated them about as badly as Carmelita Spats treated the Baudelaires. At the point, they were probably feeling quitre desperate to do anything to not be hated by other people.
