In TCC, it talks about Beverly, Elliot, and Chabo (aka Voilet, Klaus, and Sunny) Looking upon Madame Lulu's (aka Olivia's) fortune telling tent. They see the eye insignia embroidered over the flap and realize that it is actually a V, F, and D written in such a patttern that looks like an eye. The only thing is, is that I can't find the letters and I only see the eye. Am I the only one with this problem? Also, I could be wrong, but in the movie the tattoo of the eye on Olaf's ankle doesn't appear. Correct me if I'm wrong, please!

The letters in the insignia are somewhat mashed together and distorted, but certainly visible. The eyebrow bit at the top of the insignia is the V, which shares a line with the F formed by the line below, and the eye itself is the D. Here's the image for reference. I'm pretty sure we get a brief glimpse of Olaf's tattoo in the movie, although as in the books Olaf has it painted over when he's disguised as Stephano.

Here's the most recent thread on this topic. In the thread, there's an example of how the insignia can be made into letters. We see Olaf's eye in the movie when the Baudelaires first meet him. It's not the insignia in the books, rather, it's simply an eye with eyelashes, I believe.

thanks! I had no idea how it really worked, and I never saw it until now. Now I feel just a little bit, well, silly.

WHERE is THE letter "F" in the insignia of an EYE that were suppose to be V.F.D.?
i hope i am absolutely wrong and would definitely find what i am looking for.
i mean from the illustration of Helquuist in madame lulu's tent? i didnt noticed.

The F is partially merged with the V, and is often hard to make out. The right hand side of the V is the same line as the left hand side and top of the F (drawn as a curved line rather than two joined by a right-angle); the line between that stroke and the edge of the D is the second line of the F. It might help if you study the more "official" insignia in the U.A., also on a document in the Chapter Seven illustration for TCC. Non-English versions often have the advantage here; the French "V.D.C." is much more obvious.

I've never seen the French VDC. Is there a link to the illustration?

I don't know how many images they replaced, but this one is taken from the French TGG - the Hotel Denouement stationery.

Non-English versions often have the advantage here; I'd love to know what the German version of the insignia looked like!

Does anyone know how they came up with these translations? It must have been rather tricky, since presumably when they started they had no idea what 'VFD' stood for.

I'm pretty sure that translators get inside information on how to translate such cryptic phrases so that they don't trip up later on in the series - certainly that was the case with Harry Potter, where everyone twigged R.A.B.'s identity thanks to the non-English translations. I imagine a similar arrangement was the case with aSoUE, which suggests Handler always knew it was going to be Volunteer Fire Department (although that's remained pretty consistent).
