4. Violet never talked about what happened to her...might I suggest that she was...*gulps*...to put it cleanly--abused? (stained sheets and gown, associates dressing her, our sleeping beauty, legs together like vines, frowning) i honestly never thought about this!! but now that you mention it, i think that she was!! it's kind of sick for a kid's book, though!

1. How do you all think Violet was captured in THH? It said that she could run faster than esme. It's entirely possible that Esme used a dart gun on her. I doubt that she had the shelves fall on her... or if she did, she *just* managed to hide under one that was leaning against a wall or something, but Esme was already waiting at the other end and got her. Yeah, I think I like my theory best. ;D She may have recognized them, or she may have been caught in the fervor of the moment. I believe that she *did* recognize them and was planning to expose them from the beginning. That is entirely possible, and not unlike Snicket to write in - he's very fond of writing on multiple levels... If so, then poor Violet!

Okay. There's a problem with the part about being abused. Why would Count Olaf and his troup abuse her then kill her? It doesn't seem right.

Well, if Violet were to tell the police, you have to remember that they think she's a criminal herself, and plus she has no evidence, so I'm sure that Olaf knew that she wasn't going to be able to get them in trouble. Even if they did get in trouble with the police, Count Olaf is already wanted, so it would really hurt him.

What was that scene? I don't recall it.

Hmm. That does make a good point.

Of course, the ribbon moment is probably a retcon, as Violet left her ribbon with Hal - she never had it while Olaf was "preparing her for surgery." In any case, I'd read "Olaf" there as synecdoche for "Olaf and his troupe," which means the white-faced women could have changed her clothes (as in TBB).

I'd completely forgotten about that ribbon thing...which is quite strange, I'll admit.

Well, I guess that there isn't any real, hard evidence (as far as I know), so we can only dispute it for now. It is possible to come up with some good things just by using vague implications, though. Wow. I worded that very badly.

Well, I meant... not necessarilly good things. But I mean good stuff, as in great clues.

Violet's "abuse," sadly, could have been entirely possible. The stained gown at first sight looks like another dig at Olaf's hygeine issues, but if you think about it... why on earth would Heimlich Hospital have stained gowns? It's obviously easy to steal lab coats, as Klaus and Sunny did (and most likely Olaf, as I doubt he had enough disguises to cover his whole troupe - never do you see them all wearing the same costume.)
The ribbon in the pants is an eerie point. To be honest, that was what clinched it for me. And Violet DOES seem different after THH, if you think about it.
She gets quieter, it seems. This is especially so in TGG, when she lets Klaus do so much of the talking. Before THH, she wasalways the most talkative, the first one to step up. She looks older in the books following (TSS leaves us with a picture of her as very mature, unlike her siblings who, while mature, seem like mature children. She begins to act more adult-like.)

Maybe that's true but still, you can never know for sure. All of the signs point to...abuse but let's not forget it's fiction.

To not read the other posts in this thread (perhaps I'll edit after I read the thread)
1. I always figured Esme cornered her. Violet was, after all, weaponless, whereas Esme had her shoes at the very least (and probably more, concealed, weapons). Edit: Darts are also possible, as are falling cabinets.
2. I believe her eyes were shining because she was excited for Violet's decapitation.
3. Probably whoever grabbed the Baudelaires when they came out of hiding, found them first, or found them during the craniectomy. Also, don't you love the recurring theme of restraunts?
4. I've considered this, but she never has any symptoms common with sexually abused children really.... although it's still possible. It had to be ambiguous or it wouldn't be a children's series. Edit: First, I have no idea if this abuse is full out rape. Every time I try to decide, my mind changes. Basically, there's no way to know and reasons for and against.

Maybe Violet told Quigley about the whole being abused if she did remember. But what bugs me is that she didn't know him for a whole day yet, but she does have feelings for him and maybe thought that he was the only one she could confess to. Count Olaf is sick! First it's Kit(off topic: I am wondering if Beatrice might be his) then Violet with the marriage, he did say that she was pretty even after the Baudelaire's had foiled him, and then it's Esme. Violet's abuse could have left her scared for life as she already had to go through marriage to him, but what would be the use of the abuse? That wouldn't get him any of the Baudelaire fortune! I'm shivering thinking that the abuse might helped putting Violet to sleep only I really hope nothing happened to her
