Back to the original topic -
I think that often (not in some cases, but often) an author's books reflect the author. For example: the Redwall books by Brian Jacques are great, involve some appropriate humor, adventurous, etc. I met him at a book signing and he's also a great guy. Very funny - a great word to describe him would be "jolly."

I agree...I mean, you're not gonna find a hilarious book written by a deadbeat.

He seems cynical, and I love cynics. Of course I respect him. He's great. I heard him in interviews, I heard JK in interviews and judgining by the interviews, I respect Handler more.

Well, I doubt he answers any fan mail. He is famous, right? I haven't tried mailing him myself, so I wouldn't know.

What would we say though? I doubt that he'll answer something if it doesn't have a purpose?

Eeewwww, his other books...I mean, I don't think I can respect him at all now. This makes me have a completely new perspective on him and ASOUE, and its not e very good one. Oh well, I like the books anyway, just not him anymore.

Totally respect him as an author. The Basic Eight and Watch Your Mouth are very funny, well written books. Yes, they deal with mature issues but so do most good literature. Deal with it

Personally, I have the utmost respect for Daniel Handler. He's an incredibly talented author (and musician!), he's intelligent and well read, and he's worked hard to create the mystique around ASOUE. For a bit of perspective on how the series came about, why it addresses some adult topics, and how people have reacted to it, check out this article: dir.salon.com/mwt/feature/2000/08/17/snicket/index.html?sid=962937

I respect him for his humor and cleverness. All of the mysteries are ingeniuos. His adult books are intended for adults. He would never market those towards kids. And it's been awhile since I've read watch Your Mouth, but it kind of makes fun dysfuntional perverse people in the same way that ASOUE makes fun of adults. The young man goes to stay with the incestuous family and is baffled by their strange sex lives and how they all seem to be happy and think that it is normal, while all the while the mother is making a golem in the basement, clearly having some repressed outrage over her family's behaviors. It's not promoting incest. It's saying there are some messed up people out there.

Whats wrong with dislikeing happy endings??? They're in pretty well EVERY book you read. It gets really annoying to me... I don't know about others, but I adore the fact that he makes things NOT turn out alright. Where's the fun with happy endings anyway? They're so predictable. It'll be some epic story where everything looks terribly grim until the very end, where good triumphs over evil and they all live happily ever after.
Maybe I'm just really morbid... And what Lily thinks and a buck will buy you a soda... But I think Snicket is a genius...
