Well, they say something along the lines of "I wonder what Esmé was talking about when she said...". What they don't know is how their mother "stole" from Esmé. It's also possible that they don't know their parents' names.

They would know their parents' names by now. Surely they must have been addressed by their first names in at least one dinner party where the children could hear.

Well, we don't know what time period this is, but it might be a time period where children DIDN'T know what there parents names were. They only called them, mother, or, father, and they realy never KNEW what their real NAMES were. So.....the Baudelaires probably just didn't know the real names of their parents!

The series supposedly takes place in the "olden days" when parents didn't tell their names to their children. But the Baudelaires might have overheard their parents' first names, as Sugarhigh suggested.

I've wondered if maybe everyone in VFD is somehow related, distantly even. But that would be a bit weird, sinc eit would make a Violet/Quigley pairing kinda... kissing-cousins-ish. Ew. But myabe if they're like, tenth cousins, it wouldn't be so so bad.

Even if the Bauedelaire's didn't tell their children their first names. I think the children would figure out, they are very smart. Also I think the Bauedelaire's and their children are very close and would tell their children their first names. And if the children knew their mom's first name and Esme said is I think they would ask questions, like 'did you know our mom!?' also i dont think everyone in VFD are related, it just happens some of them are.

Of course, the Baudelaires were about to discuss what Esmé meant, but were cut off.
It's interesting, really, that on some of the most important matters, the Baudelaires know more than the reader, when usually the reverse is true.

Reverse-dramatic irony? What could we call this?

Jacques looks almost the same age as Esmé. Esmé has no grey hair, whilst Lemony has lots. And we know 3 E's: The Baudelaire's Unlce Elwyn, Esmé Squalor, and Elanora Poe. Whoa! I read this...and think about this... If Uncle Elwyn is the Baud's uncle and Page 197 in LSUA we see a family tree.... E's kids are J, K, L (Jacques, K and Lemony?) E's kids are Jacques, Kit, and Lemony, that means (unless that E is Esme, or Eleanora, which I'm ruling out at this point) Elwyn is J, K, and L's parents. I lost my point, because that means that...J, K, and L are on the same generation as the Bauds which makes no sense at all.

I'm not sure now who is the Bauds mother. I did think it was Beatrice because in THH, Carrie E. Abelabudite is Beatrice Baudelaire and, I like the alliteration in her name. But who is the Bauds dad? In THH I forgot which name, but one of them is an anagram for Vot Baudelaire. And one of them is Brett Helquist, but I'm pretty sure he's not the Bauds mother.

Not sure about Vot, but Ada O. Ubervillet is Vlt Baudelaire and Ed Valiantbrue is Vnt Baudelaire. I think Beatrice is their mother, and their father is just Mr. Baudelaire.
