Dr. Gustav Sebald-Monty’s assistant?
There has been much discussion about Dr. Gustav Sebald and Montgomery Montgomery’s assistant, Gustav. Gustav (the assistant) was Monty’s assistant until he was drowned in a swamp by Olaf, so that Olaf could be Monty’s new assistant. Sebald (as I will be calling him from now on, to avoid confusion) was a famous film director who is also dead. I will now present the reasons why Sebald and Gustav are either the same person, or two completely different people:
Pro:
1. Both Gustav and Sebald are dead
2. Sebald is part of VFD, and Monty is most likely also part of it (although he does not know the Sebald code…). If Monty is part of VFD, it is entirely possible that his assistant is too.
3. They both possess the same first name.
Con:
1. Gustav is drowned in a swamp, and less than a week later, Monty and the Baudelaires watch a film by Sebald with a hidden code which warns Monty that: “Your new assistant is not one of us”. If this film was made by Gustav, how could he have hidden the secret message about the new assistant when he wasn’t even dead and there wasn’t even a new assistant
2. One would think that Monty would remark that the film they where watching was made by his old assistant. It is not mentioned in any way, but this could be simply because Montgomery didn’t know, or didn’t wish to share the information with the children.
Out of these points I can draw the following conclusions:
1. Gustav and Sebald are two entirely different people.
2. Gustav made the film earlier, and one of his associates put in the scene with the code in it after his death.
3. Gustav knew of Olaf’s plans to kill him and warned Monty about it before it happened, in the event that it would. This is rather unlikely, as Gustav would have fled or found some means to defend himself against Olaf if he had known he was to be killed.
I personally favor 1. as it is the simplest way to explain it. 2., however, could also be possible, especially when considering that there would not be time to make a film in the week that Olaf became Monty’s assistant, so the film must have been pre-made.
Another theory by PJ Productions.
