Baudelaire Parents – Murderers?
“I remember that evening well. It was a performance of La Forza del Destino. Your mother was wearing a red shawl, with long feathers along the edges. During intermission I followed them to the snack bar and slipped them a box of poison darts before Esmé Squalor could catch me.” -Kit Snicket, The Penultimate Peril, Page 8 & 9
“…just as I wondered, on that fateful evening long ago, as I hurried out of the opera house before a certain woman could spot me – if it was the force of destiny that was guiding their story, or something even more mysterious, even more dangerous, and even more unfortunate.” -Lemony Snicket, The Penultimate Peril, Page 18
“I guess the sub-sub-librarian hasn’t told you the story about your parents,” he said,” and a box of poison darts. Why don’t you ask him, orphans? Why don’t you ask this legendary librarian about that fateful evening at that opera?” -Olaf, The Penultimate Peril, Page 211
“Tell me what the weapon is that left you an orphan, and I’ll type it in for you.” Count Olaf gave Klaus a slow smile that made the Baudelaires shudder. “Certainly I’ll tell you,” he said. “It was poison darts.” -Klaus Baudelaire and Olaf, The Penultimate Peril, Page 308
I will be analyzing the above quotes and then I will make an assumption about what happened. In the first quote, we can see that the Baudelaire parents received a box of poison darts during an opera. The second quote indicates that it was a fateful evening, i.e. something that night occurred that would have a great impact. The third quote hints that the Baudelaire parents did something ignoble that night, something treacherous, involving poison darts. The final quote tells us that Olaf’s parents were murdered by poison darts.
Let’s recap: The Baudelaire parents did something ignoble with some poison darts during an opera, and Olaf’s parents were murdered by poison darts. And the events are described as “fateful”. If Olaf’s parents were murdered by VFD, then Olaf himself might turn against VFD, and bring about the schism.
So the Baudelaire parents almost certainly committed murder, or, at the very least, greatly contributed to it. The former is more likely.
