However the balrogs were corrupt even from the earliest days, before the existence of the orcs even.

So they're not all good. I'm reading a lot about balrogs in The Fall of Gondolin which is part of The Book of Lost Tales Part 2.

Er, they're rather brutal and evi. Though there are only 7 of them if you count the ones that died.

I think the Balrogs are too big to have the ring fit on their hands. . .
XD I'm imagining an invisible Balrog, stalking people and stuff. . .

That'd be pretty scary. I wonder how many are left, probably none after Gandalf killed the one in moria.

Do balrogs band together as groups, or do they fight against each other as well as trying to kill everyone else?

It would seem that they band together as a group under their master Morgoth, and as soon as he was overthrown they were either destroyed or hidden.

Wasn't Morgoth that Valar dude from the Simarillion??
. . .I feel like an amateur amongst all these LOTR experts. . .

He was. He was sauron's master and pretty much ruined everything during the first age until the valar sent a huge host of elves and spirits that smashed his armies and carried him wrapped in a chain to be thrown into the void. There he is still till the end of Arda.

. . .O.o. . .
You have to remember, Jacques, I haven't even read the LOTR trilogy--just watched the movies, read The Simarillion, and read The Hobbit. That is as far as I go with LOTR fan-ness.
(EDIT: I didn't even finish all of The Simarillion.)
Reason for Editing: clarification

Hm. Well you should probably finish the silmarillion and read the lotr series if you want to know more, I can't tell you all the stuff that's in there, as I can't remember all the details.

*rushes off to the nearest LOTR library*
Well, actually not. My dad has all the books at home, I'll look them up then.
