the war of the north? The Silmarillion deals with the First Age, the war of the jewels, fought against Morgoth when Sauron was just a servant.

It's somewhat mentioned in ttt and rotk when Legolas hints to Gimli that their own people in the north wouldn't come to help in their fight becuase they're already occupied with their own war.

Hm. Well now I think on it... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_History_of_Middle-earthVolume number 8 of the Histories of Middle Earth(I put off reading those books for years, I've caved) is called war of the Ring, and from there I assume you can read about the war in the north.
