Nobody really seems to appreciate the vital role Legolas provides in lotr. Let me just say, that pisses me off to no end. because nobody really cares about elves, even though they are vastly superior to any race, ever!!! OK, don't get me started on elf-rights...I'll just go on, on, on, on ALL day!!! <:^> ;D HAPPY POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!

*sigh* Oh great, MORE "OMG I LOVE LEGOLAS"
Yes I do like elves and they are to some degree superior to men in Arda one might say. But the importance of elves in Middle Earth specifically has dwindled as they slowly get weary of mortal lands and depart to the blessed realm across the sea.
Yes the elves played an important part in the war of the ring but it was MOSTLY fought and won by men. It is even said by various sources that Legolas isn't of too much importance... Sure he occassionally added 60 orcs to the pile but really.... I bet they could've gotten through Lorien with just Aragorn for he knew Arwen and Galadriel and could've gained passage. And other than that he doesn't play an absolutely necessary role...

Way to defend your arguements, Zachy.
That was all I really had to say because my only argument would be "You know.. Arwen is an elf.. and she's really cool." and Liv Tyler love isn't really an argument.

I never said the men weren't important, and that they weren't largely the winners in the war. I am just saying that I believe that Legolas is an important character that nobody seems to care about. If JRR Tolkein put him in the book, he must have some significance that your pretty little head can't comprhend. Because really, who are your to contradict JRR Tokien, the mastermind behind the creation of middle earth???
P.S. If you don't like the fact that some people like Legolas, don't post on their threads and rain on their parades, someone might get the idea that you're a little condecending.
P.P.S. GOD FORBID I LIKE A CHARACTER AND DEVOTE A THREAD TO HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.P.S. GOD FORBID I LIKE A CHARACTER AND DEVOTE A THREAD TO HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And god forbid someone have a different opinion from yours and share it. There is 'freedom of speech,' you know. And Zach was very civil in what he said, and he defended his arguments well. Heck, what he said was a lot more civil than your response to him. Since I'm here, I might as well add that I also don't see Legolas contributing much, save for the friendship he forms with Gimli, since their races traditionally don't get along. I don't think that just because a character appears in a book, it makes them significant, no matter how good the author is. Plenty of books have characters who are there just to fill space. I'm currently reading a book with about 30 such characters, if not more, and this is from a nobel-prize winning author. Perhaps we're just missing something. Care to enlighten us on what "vital role" Legolas provides?

I'm sure that they would have gotten through the battles without him, it would just take some other people stepping up to kill some odd number of oarks and oraki.

One 'important' role of Legolas (I'm talking about the movies here) is that HE is the elven representative in the fellowship of the ring and helps to protect Frodo and the ring e.g. Mines of Moria, he helped attack the swamp beast and then later he killed lots of orcs and identified the Balrog... He is also useful as he has much better eyesight and hearing than any of the others, he hears the 'foul voice on the wind' on the snowy mountain etc. He does other stuff too these are just a few examples.

EXACTLY, YOU HAVE READ MY MIND. Even though he runs away from the Balrog...but that's not important. And also, he's a PRINCE. And if he was choosen out of ALL the elves, "there must be something there, that wasn't there before" (sorry, I have the sometimes annoying habit to quote Disney movies...why am I saying sorry to you "Legolas-haters"?)

Woah... you need to calm yourself down a little... you're twisting everyone's words a ton here. OK, IF I'M NOT ALLOWED TO LIKE LEGOLAS, WHO AM I ALLOWED TO LIKE??? ARAGORN??? YEAH, HE'S AWESOME AND ONE OF MY FAVORITES, BUT WAY OVER USED AND PUBLISIZED. I don't think anyone said you weren't allowed to like him. We simply said we didn't like him as much (we are allowed to have our opinions, too, you know), and wished that you'd defend why you like him a little more, or what you thought made him important. You start the topic by saying he has a vital role, but never say what that role is... all people wanted was for you to expound on that a bit, really. The World Is Quiet Here did this well, I thought.... she gave a list of reasons, clearly and calmly. All you did after people with different opinions posted was (a) attack them, and (b) insist Legolas must have a vital purpose, because he was in the book, but still didn't say what... your most recent post was quite a bit better, and it was nice to see you backing up your thoughts more. why am I saying sorry to you "Legolas-haters"?) Well, first of all, you're saying it because one should still be polite to someone one disagrees with, and it shows you're above hating people over petty disagreements. And second, because I don't think any of us said we're Legolas haters. Snicketface actually said she loved the character. And I agree with her... as a character, yes, I like him, I just don't think he contributes as much as some of the others. Am I saying he should have been left out? Definitely not. But I don't think he deserves quite as much praise as he gets. Do I hate Legolas? Not in the least. What I hate is fangirls who say they love the character, merely because they think Orlando Bloom is hot. As such, I tend to back away from that fandom (hence, why I probably appeared a bit... skeptical throughout the thread, and for that I apologize)... This doesn't diminish my like for the focus of that fandom, though.
