I was once obsessed with learning Quenya. www.uib.no/People/hnohf/That has an AWESOME series of unfortunate lessons which can bore you all to tears while at the same time teaching you Quenyan bit by boring bit. Really, it is a very nice site. Go there. I learned how to count to ten in Elvish. ...Um... minë atta neldë canta lempë enquë otso tolto nertë cainen And that's ten in Quenya.

Yuh. I will never understand how/why Tolkien came up with these languages. A Byzantine task I'd say.

Well technically one could say writing was his job so all of that was his life's work and so that was essentially his life. *shrug*

Some people say that Tolkien's chief mission in writing the books was so he could show off his language-making skills.

really? But the language isn't too great a part in them, I mean elvish is rarely used throughout the story, except for proper nouns and titles in the Silmarillion, and occasional passages in lotr.

Yeah. Rereading the silmarillion I see the languages are used a lot/clash because the dwarves get mad at the elves for changing all the names, and certain groups of people learn some languages better. For instance the dwarves refuse to teach others their language/the elves don't like the way their language sounds and don't use it.

I once found a Quenya website but learning a language out of a dictionary, nah. I have better things to do. Though I did hear my friend say his cousin spoke fluent elvish.
