Why are hobbits the only ones with last names??? I've wondered that for awhile... But once Galadriel referred the Legolas as "Legolas Greenleaf", hence the name... However, here's the quote:
"Legolas Greenleaf long under tree In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more."
But also, from reading the laguages of Tolkien's Middle Earth, I leared that "las" meant leaf, so it could just be a translation of his name...

Everyone in lotr is sometimes referred to by their parents like "frodo son of Drogo Legolas son of Thranduil Gimli son of gloin Meriadoc son of Saradoc" Hobbits for some reason divided themselves into clans, I'm not entirely sure why.. But in the cases of elves and dwarves the kept such records of their family that they didn't really need last names? Dunno. Aragorn has one though, he said his clan name was to be strider in elvish which is: Telcontar.

Um, there's also Gandalf Stormcrow, and Arwen Evenstar. And Mr. Butterburr (or however you spell it).

Yes, the breelanders have last names but for some reason none others do.. Eomer was called Eomer Eadig, but Eowen doesn't really have a last name. Nor does Saruman or Beregond or Ioleth. It's odd. And Stormcrow is not Gandalf's last name, it's a sort of epithet like if someone were to say Klaus Researcher Extraodrinaire, Researcher Extrodinaire obviously not being his last name.
