Now everytime I read/watch Frodo and Sam's agony as they work toward mount doom I think of how unnecessary it was. But I suppose there are reasons why they couldn't just do it that way, Sauron would have set all the power in the land against them, he might have wreathed the mountain in orcs/fire so they couldn't have found a way in. or something.

I think there was something about that the place is so evil that the birds, like, refused to fly there. Except I don't remember where I heard that. But it makes sense to me.
