I also attempted to read the Silmarillion since I have an obsession to know EVERYTHING about a series I enjoy. Unlike u guys, my attempt worked, and it wasn't that boring since it was filled with battles and action.

You have to remember, not everyone will have the same likes/dislikes as you, and that's no reason to call them immature/close-minded (which is what your post implies).

Yes, I'd like to think that I am not closed-minded/immature simply because I didn't enjoy a book.

Yeah, don't sound like the rude, mean, ugly and horrible language nazi teacher from my future high school who basically told us we know nothing when it comes to classic literature and that if we say a book is boring she will cast us off as ignorant and immature. She was a downright WITCH. Don't go down that path..

what i was saying was," you have to have an OPEN MIND and YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THOSE KINDS OF BOOKS. that is all. nothing against the people that don't like it. just that you have to have an open mind etc... nothing against anyone at all.

By saying that you "have to have an open mind" to read it, it directly implies that those that don't like it do NOT have an open mind. Which is rather rude, to say the least. Open mind has nothing to do with a person's preference.

I don't like being told I'm not openminded because I disliked a book. Here follows my relationship with LOTR:
-Read The Hobbit when I was quite young. Loved it. Watched the bad movie, which was pretty funny and okayish at the time. Good times...
-Saw The Fellowship of the Ring. Liked it a lot, for some reason.
-Read The Fellowship of the Ring really quickly, gobbled it all up. Didn't find it boring.
-Read The Two Towers before the movie came out. Had to force myself to finish it. Realized I really didn't like the style of the books, or the constant battle, which is one of the reasons I stopped there. It got to be too much, "And then Aragorn smote him with his mighty sword and the sound of a thousand outcries of terror echoed through the hearts of the orcs as..." etc.
-Didn't The Two Towers until this year. Haven't yet seen ROTK. Don't really need to.
After a couple books, some perseverance and all, I've come to realize that I REALLY don't like reading books about battle. They bore me to tears. Hobbitts can be running away from Ringwraiths and all's fine and dandy, but after 200 pages of epic battle I want to slam my head against the desk and put the book down to move on to something I actually want to read about.
And I know, a lot of people have been shocked that I haven't finished. I mean, it's pretty much THE fantasy series. I'll have to read it someday because it's the essential fantasy literature. So I do plan to finish it despite my like or dislike of it. I just didn't enjoy it, and I don't think being more openminded and persevering would help me enjoy it anymore, you know? I'm sorry I didn't like it, but it's honestly not my fault. I went into it with the full intentions of loving it, and didn't. I don't think that makes me any less mature.
I still love the Hobbit, though, but I really don't think the rest were quite my style if you know what I mean.

LOTR is one of those books that you have to make yourself read the first few chapters and then you get hooked! Thats how it was with me. I couldnt understand what was so great about them when I read the first few pages, but once I got into it I read all three in 15 days.

I thought it would be like that, but I just couldn't get into it at all.

no no no! i mean you can't really think of anything else while you are reading. for instance, while your reading it you think to yourself if you fed the dog. thus losing any interest you had in the book. that is what i meant. sorry if i "hurt" your feelings. didn't mean to. really very sorry.

Anyways... I don't like the battles, really. Once it divides into the different parts, I prefer to read about what Frodo and Sam are going through, then reading about the battles everyone else are going through. It took me forever to get through the first part of TTT, but then I finished the second part in a couple days. Now, I'm stuck on the first part of ROTK, despite the fact that it's Pippin-centric for a lot of it.

Here's how my lotr reading worked: -grandpa was going to take me to see fotr but didn't, so instead got me the book -Read a bit, was slightly bored but as soon as I read about a ring making people invisible I liked it -when I got to bombadil I got sick and didn't read it for a month or so -Got back to reading and swallowed it whole -grabbed the other two asap and read them quickly -saw all 3 movies -was too obsessed and ended up reading unfinished tales, the hobbit, and the silmarillion after I LOVE the battles, they're so cool! But that's just my opinion...
