Opening UpWhen Jerome makes a new friend, shortly after his family's move to Hill Valley, things in his life starts to look up. Will he ever learn to overcome his shyness? PlayersEmma Squalor ~ ASOUE characters quagmire44 ~ BTTF characters Hill Valley, California October 19, 1985 2:30 PM PDTSeventeen-year-old Martin Seamus McFly smiled - as he was sitting across from his girlfriend, Jennifer Jane Parker. This was a great day for him. Marty and Jennifer had been dating for almost two years. His father had also promised to pick up a Nintendo Entertainment System for him, which was released in North America just yesterday. "I can tell that you're certainly feeling happy, Marty," Jennifer commented, coyly. "Hard to believe that it's been almost two years, eh?" "Most definitely," Marty replied, flashing a lopsided smile. "You and I were paired up for a class assignment, and we had to do a report of Jules Verne. I never much cared for our teacher, but it was a..." "Our first study date turned into our first genuine date," Jennifer pointed out, smiling. "Well, I'm so happy to have met you. Why don't we spend some time in the arcade?" "That sounds like a good idea," Marty agreed, eagerly. Slowly, Marty and Jennifer stood up - and the couple made their way to the arcade. "How about playing..." Marty noticed an unfamiliar boy playing Pacman, his favourite game. "Hey, Jenn, I don't think I've ever met this boy. Why don't we go talk to him?" "That's a good idea," agreed Jennifer, softly. "If he's new in town, then I think it's a good idea to make him feel welcome." "Well, great minds think alike," Marty replied, chuckling. Heading over to the Pacman machine, he asked, "Sir, I don't think I've seen you around. Are you new in town?" OOC: I think this is where you come in.

[Your post was great, and I love the dialogue between Marty and Jennifer. Here is my post.] The unfamiliar voice startled Jerome, so that his hands shifted unevenly on the controls and his game ended. He wasn’t annoyed, but rather a little anxious, and he turned to face the owner of the voice. Jerome’s eyes came to rest on a boy and girl, both of whom looked to be around his own age. He never did particularly well around strangers— his heart would race and his palms would sweat. Sometimes he would even lapse into an embarrassing spasm of stuttering, which was a struggle for him to control. Still, he managed to bestow a friendly smile to the couple in front of them. “Yes,” he said, speaking slowly so that he wouldn’t be interrupted by his stuttering. “I’m Jerome Squalor, and I recently moved here with my family. We live in the big mansion at the edge of town.”

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Jerome," Marty replied, flashing a lopsided smile. The poor boy must've felt nervous about living in a new town - which Marty couldn't exactly relate to, since he grew up in Hill Valley. "Well, my name's Marty McFly - and this is my girlfriend, Jennifer Parker." "It's nice to meet you, Jerome," Jennifer added, in a friendly voice. "Marty and I happen to like Pacman, too." "Not that we're meaning to rush you, though," Marty was quick to added. "It's just that... Well, later on, what would like to come over to our house? Dad was gonna buy us a Nintendo, today." "And, sometime next week, his dad is gonna buy him a 4X4 Toyota truck," Jennifer added, smiling. "His parents do tend to spoil him." OOC: So far, so good!

Jerome didn’t like to admit it, but he could relate to the “spoiling” part. His own father had lavished upon him and his younger brother all of the materialistic desires that any boys their age could ever want. However, Jerome had never cared for the electrical train set (which had frightened him) he had received for Christmas at age five, or the football (which he had found to be especially dull) he had gotten for his eighth birthday.
As a child, he had been very much content with playing with his easy-bake oven and collection of dolls. But Maxwell had put a stop to all that by giving the items away to Jerome’s two female cousins on his mother’s side.
“Thank you very much for the invitation,” Jerome said. He was careful not to add how his father had been after him for years to make at least a few more male acquaintances besides Monty Montgomery and Jacques Snicket. “I don’t have to be home until seven for dinner, so I can spare a few hours.”
[Yes, it is! ^_^]

"That sounds awesome," Marty replied, smiling. "I'm sure that my twin brother, Artie, will also be pleased to meet you. We could all play Super Mario Bros together. I think the Nintendo system allows only for two players to play at once, but we can take turns."
"Zoe and I had plans for tonight," Jennifer commented, smiling. "I still can't get over how my best friend is dating your best friend. After Artie and Doc, that is."
"Zach and Zoe really do seem to be hitting it off," Marty replied, smiling. Turning to Jerome, he added, "Tomorrow, I could introduce you to more of my friends. How's that sound?"
OOC: What about Monty, though? He's a guy.

[*smacks forehead* Yes, you’re right! I can’t believe I forgot about Monty— and Jacques, too! XD I went back to my last post and made a reference to them. Also, I hope I got the name of Marty’s high school right. If I didn’t, then don’t hesitate to let me know. ] Blushing, Jerome nodded slowly. “That’s very kind of you,” he said. “I do have a few friends, but they’ll be away at boarding school until Friday evening. By the way, what school do the two of you attend?” Jerome was very much aware that he could be a bit scatterbrained at times, so he supposed that Marty and Jennifer could be students at the Hill Valley High School. But Jerome was far too shy to ask.

"We go to Hill Valley High School," explained Marty, softly. "I know it's not very creative, but this is a relatively small town. Oh, I must caution you to be careful of Mr. Strickland."
"Yeah, he's a strict man," agreed Jennifer, nodding. "Most of the kids at school aren't that bad, but you should be careful around Douglas Needles, Miff Tannen, and their gangs. Miff's dad, Count Biff, is quite a dreadful man."

“‘Count’?” Jerome repeated, mesmerized. “Does that mean he’s a descendent of royalty?”
Ever since his young boyhood, Jerome had been an avid reader. He loved to lose himself in adventurous tales depicting knights rescuing princesses, and always imagined himself as the hero. He would love to have a girlfriend, but feared that wouldn’t happen until after he had graduated from high school.

"I never really thought much of it, to be honest," replied Marty, softly. "So, uh, what are some of your interests? What kind of music do you like?"
OOC: I'm not sure of why exactly I thought of making Biff a count, other than the fact that he's quite a bad guy - like Count Olaf. Also, I guess Maxwell has a rather strict standard for gender roles? I do wonder what it would be like, if he also had a daughter.

Jerome grinned, and rubbed his face with one hand. Participating in conversation with those he didn’t know well never failed to make him nervous. As he lowered his hand a moment later, it was clear to see that he was blushing. “Well, I do enjoy the Beatles,” he said, biting down a little on his bottom lip. “As well as Huey Lewis and the News. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, though.” [Biff’s count status really suits his character. And yes, Maxwell is very old-fashioned when it comes to gender roles. He doesn’t believe that women should have jobs and that sort of thing. He and Cora having a daughter is an interesting idea— if they did, she would probably be a lot like Annabel.]

"Huey Lewis and The News!" gasped Marty, excitedly. "That's my favourite band, too! I like The Beatles, too - but they're not really my favourite? Say, do you like Van Halen? Led Zeppelin? Or Very Fine Dudes?"
OOC: Yeah, that's kind of what I thought.

“My younger brother is more a fan of Van Halen and Led Zeppelin than I am,” Jerome confessed. “But I’m quite fond of Very Fine Dudes. My best friend, Jacques Snicket, took me to their concert for my last birthday. He’s away at boarding school, so we don’t get the opportunity to see each other much.” [Cora would be thrilled to have a daughter, I think. Even if she continuously defied her father like Andrew. ]

"I wonder what boarding school is like," commented Marty. "I don't think I would like to spend so much time away from my family."
"Me either," replied Jennifer, nodding. "You're lucky to have gone to the VFD concert. Marty and I went to see Huey Lewis and The News, right on Marty's seventeenth birthday. We have yet to see Van Halen, though."
"I wish I was old enough to have gone to a Led Zeppelin concert," Marty replied, sighing. "Well, Jerome, we should probably start heading to my place."
"And I might as well start heading home," added Jennifer, as she and Marty hugged. "You have fun with Jerome, okay?"
"I certainly will," Marty replied, softly. "I love you, Jenn." Turning to Jerome, Marty asked, "Well, Jerome, are you ready?"
OOC: I figured that including Jennifer would be a bit awkward, so that's why I had her take off. When we get to Marty's place, I'll be introducing Artie.

With a shy smile, Jerome nodded. This was the first time since his childhood that he had been invited to the home of a friend, and he hoped that he wouldn’t come to regret it. At seven years old, he had been invited to a sleepover, and an hour before bedtime he had begun crying for his mother. That hadn’t gone down well at all with the boy whose house he was staying at. Over the next year, his entire first-grade class taunted him with the names “cry-baby” and “mama’s boy”. As Jerome stepped out of the arcade with his newfound friend, he asked, “Do you live close by?” [O.K., that sounds perfect to me. ]

"I live about two miles away," explained Marty, nodding. "I'm borrowing my Dad's car, since I don't have my truck, yet. I live at Lyons Estates."
Marty smiled, as he was looking forward to next week Saturday - when he and Jennifer would be spending the weekend at the lake.
OOC: I decided that the pizza parlour would be a block away from the Courthouse Square - so, on the way to Marty's house, they'll be passing the clock tower and courthouse.
